2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission I found it! A mechanical idle cable....

On a lark I searched PTO throttle cable and found a cool company (http://www.awdirect.com/awdirect/catalog.cfm?dest=Index ) that had all kinds of "towie" stuff and my cable was $20. Now--who has taken that box apart at the end of the foot throttle cable in the ISB's? Before I get myself in trouble I wondered if any of you more experienced troublemakers could imagine an additional cable hooked in to where the foot throttle ends. Takers? The key is using chain, type on a pull lamp switch works good, to make the transition from the cable to the pedal or linkage. That way it doesn't interfere with the operation of your pedal. AW has some nice goodies ehh?

No, I have a boxless 12 valve and just use a stick wedged in-between the seat and pedal for my high idle device. Have seen a cable used on a few rigs, it basically just pulls the pedal towards the floor.

I wish I had a digi cam so I could take pictures of my mechanical high idler, it was dealer installed and they just attached a clevis-type thing onto the arm beside where the throttle pedal cable attaches. It's really simple, actually a little hoakie but it works well. Under the dash there's a red twist knob to set the RPM. People always ask what it's for .

Illflem: Does the "stick wedged in-between the seat and pedal" method work with the 24 valvers?... or just the 12?

Just did mine last weekend. Napa 21 bucks for a 9 foot long cable with a locking tee handle. Mines a 12 valve. Mounted tee handle to the right of ash tray in dash. It looks good there. Ran the cable thru fire wall and removed the cable from cruise control where it connects to throttle linkage. I then used small wire rope (this will flex just like the cruise wire does) and made a loop in the end and pinched it off with aluminum connector. I put this end over the linkage and re installed the cruise cable The cruise cable connector holds on the fast idle wire rope. I then clamped the small wire rope other end to the ridged cable from the Napa cable. Then connected the cable assy in place with hose clamps. When done the small wire rope and the cruise small wire rope flex and don't interfere with normal throttle movement. To set high idle I just push on pedal until rpm is where i want it then pull on tee handle and twist to lock. It works great. As others have mentioned you can use the ball chain like on a light bulb socket in place of the wire rope (it flexes even better) but they tend to break after a while. Good luck

This is good. Thank you gentlemen. The idea my cable could could hook up to the pedal instead of going through firewall is intrigueing. I have no cruise. I am attracted to Cummins for simplicity and less to drive me nuts. Simple is good. Nervous about an air system as it complicates things (another string) Sorry! I even have roll up windows and want to use my cable for warm-up and cruise control! George (waiting on snow).

If you dont have cruise then I bet you have an open (pull point)

on your throttle linkage where one would have gone if the truck hade been built with cruise. Its a good point to connect to. It should be near the point where your pedal cable connects. Have fun.

I think George has a fly by wire kind of rig, no cables.
