Bob... I see you have a 2001. 5, how did you remove the glide pins to gain access to the pads? What size torx did you use?

Just did my wife's brakes yesterday for the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. SQUELLLL!!!!

She had lots of pad left (this is an 2001 Dakota 4x4). I just took a guess they are crappy oem pads, so I went down to Consumer Auto Parts (CAP) and got some ceramic pads, lifetime warranty, for $72. 00

Put them on, and didn't change anything else... ... . QUIET AS A MOUSE !

... and ya think I would have gotten a 'thank-you' last night? Not.

Good luck

my . 000023545 cents worth- i've had the annoying break squeal at just the right pedal pressure. this has only starting happening after using raybestos semi-metallic brakes. and yep, mine is just allen wrench for the calipers-very simple.

Here is a trick that I used while working at Porscheshoppe. I done this thousands of times and it worked ever time. With the pads off, get some duct tape and put on the back side of the pads, on the medal side. Cut the tape so it is the same size and shape as the pad. No need for brake quiet.

As you drive down the road, the brakes are freefloating and the medal surfaces of the pad and caliber pistons rub. Once you apply the brakes the pressure is put on the pad to hold it still. The duct tape keeps the medal surfaces from touching and no noise. I drive on dusty roads and I had never had a squeak doing this. The tape is good untill your next brake job, no need to repeat the process untill your brakes are worn down.

Pitbull, if you ever develop the dreaded squeal, you will hear it. Stereo and rattlin Cummins don't disguise it, it's that obnoxious!!! Mine comes and goes, haven't fixed it yet, but I have heard that Igibson's duct tape solution does work!!! Now what size Torx bit for an '01... . :D . Jim G.

Must be a DC thing

I was in a parking lot today when a brand new Mercedes (no plates) pulled in, the brake squeal was so bad I almost had to cover my ears.

Since I've been using Carbomet pads from Sam Peterson, no more squeal.

No cure here, but mine were squeelin' a couple months ago, so I ripped 'em apart, took a look-see... ... ... nothin', so I re-installed 'em, and no squeel since, go figure. BTW, 60,790 miles on the original pads, front and back.

Mine made it to 70,000 before the right front had a melt down.
