My teamate and I decided to go out to the range today, and we got stranded by a flash flood. It rained pretty hard last night, and there is a low water crossing at the entrance to the range. On the way out there, I wondered if it would be flooded, but when we got to the range, the water level was normal. I thought the water had already passsed since we had to move some debris from the crossing. After 20 minutes, my teamate took his hearing protection off, and he heard the rushing water. At this point, the water was a few feet over the brige, so we decided to wait it out. After about an hour, another wave hit, and within 15 minutes, the water rose about 10 feet more. We drove the vehicles to the highest ground we could find, and at one point, we were in the bed of the truck since the water had risen up to the wheels.
We made some calls, and the fire department came out to rescue us since the 20 foot wide creek was now over 160 yards wide (we used the laser range finder )
and we were out of dry ground.
We ended up swimming back across the deep part, and all is well. My truck and my friends Z28 are still stranded at the range.
We floated the weapons and electronic devices we take to the range on a boogie board. We wouldnt go back unless we took the guns with us, so we swam, and they floated across.
Its been a tough day, and more rain is expected tonight. I am going to attempt a Ram rescue around 9:00 tonight before another storm hits.
