Guys I really hate my automatic transmission! I know that I can get a goerend and that will hold fine, but I hate automatic's!

Anyone ever do the swap to a manual transmission? I am confident of my skills in doing it, but is it a real pain in the butt? I just don't have a ton of available time to due it. Even a whole weekend is questionable at this point!

I am pulling a 3100# trailer with a 7000# skid on back and I know the stock transmission won't be long for this kind of usage.

It would seem easier to sell the truck and buy one with a 5 speed. You would have to change the steering column, hang a clutch pedal, as well as all the transmission/clutch work. A weekend without sleep probably wouldn't be enough. I just bought my truck because I wanted an automatic to plow snow with. I am pulling the automatic next week and having a triple disc torque converter and new valve body, etc. installed. Still an automatic, but better for snow plowing. JH

There is a guy that did a conversion last year. Said it went really well because all of the parts are interchangeable. He even had a list of the new parts that you would need. I forget his name, but if you did a search for it im sure you would come up with something.

Too bad you don't have a first gen. I just had mine swapped from a manual to an auto and I have the pedal and parts. Sold the 5600 and clutch to Source automotive. They are going to re sell it if you are looking for a transmission.

Flyer,

It's not a big deal. You'll need a transmission, clutch and flywheel, the yoke that goes in the transmission, and a set of pedals. You'll have to do a little drive shaft work and some wiring. Other than that it's just pull the auto out and put the manual in. With a lift, a transmission jack, and a friend, it's much easier to pull the transmission than to put the pedals in. ;) I've been told since I did mine that all you really need to do with the pedals is slide the pivot pin over enough to get the clutch pedal in the existing bracket. No need to swap the steering column either. I'd bet if you didn't know that mine really came with an auto you'd never know it sitting in the cab unless you were looking specifically for it.

I swapped the 47RH in my '94 for an '01 NV5600 over the course of two days in March '07. If you tow, the 6-speed will make you smile when going through the gears instead of hoping and praying to the slushbox gods that the automatic will last. Modified automatics from darn near anyone can hold up very well to towing duties.

I drove from Pa. to Iowa to have Dave do my transmission and would do it again . One day service and back on the road heading home. You won't regret going to Daves.

Anybody have the parts for a 98 4x4 swap? I'm getting tired of a slipping torque convertor. I have 80 k on my 47RE. Thanks. HerbW
