I grew up in Texas and Alaska and I am in the habbit of stopping. I even stopped and helped an elderly man change his tire, and that was a few months after my accident and I was in a wheelchair or the walker. It was just a habbit to stop I did not even think about my condition. Between the two of us we got it fixed.
I had a '79 Trans-Am that someone tried to take the wheels. I must have spooked him and he did not finish the job. The problem was I did not know that it happened until later. I was going down I-15 outside Vegas and the car started to shimmy, doing 80 or so. I slowed down and stopped, and as soon as I stopped the tire fell off. Only one stud was left and it had no lug nut on it. It was around 9:00 pm on a Friday. Alot of traffic and it was the drivers side front wheel.
I started to walk to town to get the parts to get it fixed. I did not get a few hundred feet and I got a ride. I got a ride with a young (30 year old), very attractive, married mother of 3 kids, and she was by herself. I am 6'5" and 240 pounds and just got off work as a mechanic and in my work clothes. She had trust in people to pick me up knowing how dangerous it is in that area, and with her having a family.
I got the parts and she even drove me back to my car. She had to get home, her husband had dinner made for her. Now I am tring to work on the car a few feet of traffic going 80 mph. A semi pulled up behind me and noised his front end blocking me from the traffic. I got it fixed and thanked the trucker. He sat there for almost an hour, never leaving his truck, till I got it fixed.
Yes I help people, what goes around comes around and that night proved it to me. I was about 25 miles from town at night, in some dirty work clothes and never thought I would get the help I did. Oh by the way, the lady drove a Ford Crewcab Powerstroke. It is nice to know there are still good people in this world.....
