I Hate Ups!!!

Yeah, the spray foam is GREAT stuff and makes for a bulletproof package. Well, asty least UPS-proof!



This is why I ALWAYS have the company pack it themselves. If I ship UPS, I have UPS do all the packaging-- boxes, wrap, labelling, etc. This way, they have NO WIGGLE ROOM AT ALL if it's damaged, because it's their fault either in packaging OR in handling.



If you want to do good packaging at home, try the expanding foam they use to seal dryer vents and such. Just make sure that your item to be shipped is wrapped in Saran Wrap or such to protect it from the sticky foam.



Part of my job for the USAF involves supervising cargo movement. You can bet that there's a lot to answer for if a $1M+ radar part gets damaged in shipping.

I send 200 to 300 packages per year using UPS. They are not the problem. The only problems I have had are firearms. I have had intentional damage inflicted on gun cases by UPS employees. They have always payed the claims in a timely manner when it was not caused by poor packaging. I recently received a new p7100 that was hanging out of the box when it arrived. It was slightly damaged. I sent a p7100 up to Washington recently in a very flimsy box because it was all I had. I spent about an hour cutting cardboard to strengthen the box. It arrived in perfect condition. I trust no one else to do it for me. When it is a difficult item like a turbo I will usually add 4 layers of cardboard to all inside surfaces. Also pack it tight. If it will move when you shake it, it will be flopping all over by the time it arrives. Bubble wrap is for printed circuit boards and light bulbs. Cardboard and newspaper tamped in with a pick handle so tight that the ink squeezes out is the only way, unless you build a cool plywood container.

Poor packaging.

2 turbos in one thin box is asking for trouble.

What works good is getting a good double lined box or adding cardboard walls to an existing box, then using heavy duty packing paper (thin cardboard) to wrap the charger up.

Special attention to the outlet and inlet areas.



No movement in the box is a must also, a loose turbo in a box will break on through' given enough handling.



About 1/3 roll of duct tape to seal up the job!

UPS has always been good with my packaging. It is all up to the package. I do a lot of ebay stuff and only had one thing break on me. I never saw proof of pics, just was told by the buyer. I told the buyer to call ups, they inspected it and tried to say i did not package good enough. They called me and told me they were not going to pay. The said, is that okay, i said no it was packaged to specs. then I had a check for 118 in the mail the next week. I sent the buyer the full refund, let him keep the whole package and i made an extra 20 bucks. everyone happy... .



Don't let UPS say no...

from seeing how guys on our dock @ overnite treat packages that say "fragile" or have arrows that point in one direction, that doesnt suprise me. it really flustres me that people have to treat other peoples products like they have no value what so ever. i do hope UPS did the right thing and took care of the damages and paid for a new turbo... ... good luck and keep us posted.

Well, my neighbor and i took a torch, a think flat plate and a brass drift to the damaged part of the turbo and somewhat "massaged" it into place. I think it will seal and if not, I guess I will take the turbo and the part it clamps to and have them TIG welded together. Really NOT happy about having to do it like this but what can i do. From what i gather, UPS is gonna screw me due to neglegent packaging so whatever. I posted this up at another large site that I frequent hoping to find input from people that know UPS and here's what they had to say.

Things to remember when shipping from coast to coast are numerous. After doing the photo editd eal its easy to see that UPS had nothing to do with the packaging of this except for adding their label. Anyone who ships long distances need to understand you can never put enough protection inside a package,more is always better. The big package companies ship East-West and vise versa by rail box and if you have ever seen a loaded rail box you would understand why that may have happened. Shotgun loads,stacked tightly and shaken to pieces by the train and its tracks cause a huge amount of damage. The only true way to minimize damage is to pay the extra amounts and have it shipped air freight next day. It gets handled alot less and is more likely to be intact when it arrives.

I know with the amount of overseas shipping you do things like you have shown happen alot. US Customs will do things like that on alot of electronic items to check for countries of orign labels and/or suspicious substances. I am amazed that electronics will still function after finally getting into the country after all the checks and X-ray radiation they are subjected to,LOL. If all you guys have had happen so far is a few damaged ECM's by Customs like that feel lucky. Wait until they hold your shipments due to the "quota" being met and no more being allowed to enter the country until the next month. Those were always my favorite ones to have when I crossed at Lacolle,PQ/Champlain,NY. The day before they went thru ok,that nite NOPE,unload it "Quota",grrrrrrr. customs,you just have to love it and I was glad to be paid by the hour when I was there,LOL... ..... Andy

To get anywhere with UPS you have to demand what you want. They will tell you everytime it was not packaged good enough. You have to say it was and you paid for insurance and you demand to be reimbursed. It has worked for me in the past... Even threaten with a lawsuit if needed, they will pay, persistance counts!

UPS has always been very good on items that I have shipped or received. If you want troubles try airbourne express or dhl. At least in my part of the world they are crap! Neither does the complete delivery. Hands off at least twice. I had to return a computer monitor to dell that was shipped airbourne and they wanted me to take it to the nearest drop off point. That was over 200 miles away! I finally told dell (in india btw) that if they wanted the monitor back they could come and get it.

I have had similar troubles with UPS - but what finally made me quit using them

for any personal business is the way they drive coming down our 1/4 mile long

gravel driveway - 50 mph at least, spraying gravel out in the grass to be hit w/

lawnmower and making me run to grab the kids, dogs, anything breakable -

and if you aren't there and they don't run over Fido, they will make sure to place

the package in a tempting place the dog can reach...
