I got home and when i got out of my truck i smelled oil, and i mean bad. Got flashlight and found the belly of the truck from the pinion back completey cover in oil. Now i need help very badly. I have a 01-3/4ton-6sp-ctd. Dana 80 i beleive. Does any body have a P/N for the pinion seals, is there a inside and an outside seal? Do i need a puller to get the yoke off, i would be greatful for any advise as to P/Ns and how to change the seals out. HELP What type of oil to replace with, what weight also. Thanks:{ Thanks Guys.

First off

Relax, its not too bad of a crisis if you didnt run it dry on oil.

1)block your wheels for safety

2)put truck in nuetral

3)mark your connection between the driveline yoke and the companyon flange, so you can re-installe back the same.

4)remove bolts holding carrier bearing so it wont bind you up.

5)remove U bolts holding u joint in

6)remove the bolts holding the companion flange.

remove big nut from pinion

7) remove pinion with puller tool

8)remove seal and replace , drive it in with a hammer on a 2x4 flat on the seal as to drive it evenly (careful here)

put back together in reverse order

U-joint bolts are 22# torque

companion flange touque is 80#

pinion nut torque, measure this befor you remove and use samr torque going back together.

Use a good synthetic lube per owners manual

hope this helps, Kevin

Let me clairify something

The big nut holding the pinion on is different on all trucks pending what the preload was for your set of gears (ring and pinion) thats why you measure the torque first so when you go back together you have the same preload.

cheers, Kevin

How many miles do you have on the truck. My truck did this when it was new the stealer fixed it under warranty and that was 100,000 miles ago approx. it hasn't leaked since. I think this is why Dodge no longer uses Dana axles they had to many problems with them.

Just for some info. It takes more torque to get a nut or bolt moving than when it is already moving. It is better to mark the nut and then to re install it to that same mark or about 1/8 further. I don't know about a Dana but most pinions have a crush sleeve and you tighten the pinion nut with the ring gear removed and use a inch pound torque wrench to measure the resistance of the pinion gear and then keep tightening the nut until it is met. Dana may have a different system. But it will be more accurate to put the nut back to the same spot that it was removed.

I had a rear seal leak on my 98. 5 and the dealer replaced the seal and still leaked. They put in another and worked okay but when I got it home it was leaking. Went back to dealer and service manager head a hissing sound... . turned out the breather for the rear end was plugged up, no more problems.

The DANA 70 and 80 do not use a crush sleeve to set pinion pre load. They use a shim pack behind the front pinion bearing for pre load. The torque on the pinion nut is 440 ft-lbs. You should not reuse the pinion nut. Service Manuals are really handy things to have.

Pinion Seal

I just replaced the seal on my 2001 2500. My axle had the inner and the outer seal. The inner seal is the only one available by itself. The outer seal comes with a new yoke. You can tell this one by the outer seal that looks like a partial seal that comes off with the pinion nut. The other part is the seal that fits into the axle housing.

You can drive the single piece seal (the one I did not need) home with a 2 x 4, but not the two part inner seal. This seal seats differently than the single piece seal. I ground a cold chisel with a taper to drive the seal in against the recessed back of the seal that has the sealant on it. If you use a flat driver with this seal, I do not think it will seat well.

I used lock tite on the pinion nut and reused it. A new nut would have been better, but the dealer did not have one and I needed the truck.

So far no leak.

Thanks You Guys, i need some time off

What a weeken, this morning i get a good look at the seal, and guess what, i had picked up some tape out of a tape casette and it had cut the seal causing the massive leak. What luck, wife comes home last night and says her car smells like anti-frezze when she was running her defroster. Ok i am thinking i can do this maybe! Then i get a call my mom needs to get to the hospital having very bad pain. I rush her to the hospital. We are trying to get her pain under control, and they are going to do a cat scan in the moring. Anyway my son calls and says he will need some help getting the nut off, he bent a cheater bar trying. My sister shows up at the hospital so i run home for a minute to get the nut off. Not, then he had a great idea, use the 3/4 rachet and let it rest on the springs, put the truck in four by and very carefully pull forward and it will loosen the nut, well it worked, he took off for a town about 60 miles away to get a seal. I went back to the hospital. When i got back to the hospital my brother inlaw was there and he needed a hand. There was a wreck and the truck flipped three times killing one man and hurt the other. He is a undertaker and i help him get this man to the funeral home, back to the hospital. Mom is resting pretty good and my son fixed my truck, filled it with oil, etc. When i get some time i am going to have to find a way clean the oil that has coated everything. He said it only took 2 quarts of oil. Man two quarts makes one heck of a mess. Anyway thanks to all, you guys are the best. Drive safe
