I have a delima need your help?????????

Hey guys my friend is a builder and he now has a chevy 1500 and I almost have him sold on buying a 2003 2500 or a 3500 but my question is hes owns a backhoe that weighs 15000lbs with a 5th wheel will our trucks pull that because right now he pays someone to move it every time he has to move it! Because hes caught between what type of truck to get! He just bought a john deere 4300 tractor with front loader and the trailer will hold up to 10000lbs and he thinks he will be okay pulling it with his chevy its a 4x4 with a 4. 8L, I told him hes gonna kill that truck he needs to get a dodge he like mine its a 2001 3/4 ton, let me know what you think about the situation if any of you guys are towing equipment that big with your rucks thanks alot!!!!!!!!

Any Chevy gasser will fall flat on its face pulling 10k or more,

you will lose mileage, and wear your engine out quickly!



With a Cummins 3500 w/ a 5speed or 6speed, he can pull those weights with no problem (properly trailered of course).



I hope some heavy pullers chime in!!

I would pull that weight in a heartbeat. He is a bit short on brakes for that kind of GCVW. And I would tell him MANUAL transmission only!! and a 6 speed will be even better than a 5 speed. I know a guy in AZ that was using a 454 3500 4x4 Chevy to pull a Case 580 4x4, he switched to the Cummins 3500 4x4 24V and cannot believe the difference. The fuel savings alone over the gasser make a good part of his payment too. Tell your buddy to go for it.

Well, I personally don't tow anything, but I do believe Jim "Cumminstrkn" Fuller and Phil "rubberneck" do tow loads heavier than 15K pounds somewhat regularly with their trucks. Rick Newland is another guy I know that tows heavy trailers all the time, but I don't recall if he is a TDR member or not.....

I pulled a 13k gooseneck with mine when I was stock. pulled it 400mi through small mountains.



I haven't been able to latch on to anything I couldn't drag off.



He'll need a 1-ton 6spg 2wd. . the 4wds have some clearance issues on 5th wheels.



If he needs the 4wd then he'll have to watch his clearances closely.

We tow 16 to 20K cattle trailers all the time with a 3500 HO 6 speed, hilly country. No problems even when it was stock. Just added an EZ, what a difference. Has a Jacobs E-brake too.

Backhoes

I haul a Case 590 Super L backhoe on a 25' Goosekneck dual tandem flat bed on a regular basis. The trailer weight is 6,250 lbs. and the backhoe with front & rear bucket weight is 15,500 lbs. . That is a grand total of 21,750 lbs.



I do this with a single wheel 2500 and a Dually 3500 both are 6 speeds and the 3500 is stock and the 2500 is what is in the signature.

i pull just about the same thing as xavier does except tralier is a dove tale. no problems pulling before the minor mods( on my sig below) and really love it after
