Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) I have a XX year truck, and my block # is...

The block issue has piqued my curiosity, and I'm trying to gather more empirical data. I thought a good next step would be to actually see what the distribution of block castings is.

It is a 56 now but I voted with the 99 #53. What does appear odd is that the ESN is still the same. I would have thought Cummins would have stamped a letter/number showing a replacement block. Any ideas on why?. I do not usually let things bother me to much but this issue goes thru my mind daily. The treatment the owner gets is down rite disgusting and the owner is suppose to like it.

Is there a difference in the tendencies for the #53 block to crack between stock or modified?

Mine says 55 on the front drivers side of the block on the lower corner. I'm assuming this is the block casting. Mines a late 01 (Feb 01 build date).

I have 100,000 on mine so far (53). I was hoping to go half a million miles with it.

I got all worried and ventured out into the cold to look... and thank the Lord above, my 2000 has a #55 block and not the 53.

My 99 was assembled in August/September 1998 in St Louis. Looks like so far I'm the first 99 that does not have the "53" block. I've read the posts for well over a year and haven't had the nerve to look... ... . I couldn't believe it, knowing my Luck for 54 years.
