got a new toy... well... got an old one back anyways

I have an old safe in my basement that I am going to move out while remodeling. Its a good time to get it out because a wall will be out.

It is a Herring Hall Marvin Safeco.

Outside Dimensions are 30" wide 30" deep and 53" tall.

Inside Dimensions are 20" wide 20" deep and 3' high.

The lock has been removed and some pieces are broke but I think most all the pieces are there.

It has a UL tag saying it is Class A fire and Class T-20 Burglary rated and sreial # is 2948.

My questions are what is a safe like this worth and how old is it? I can't seem to find much info about them online.

It has a painted on logo on the bottom of the door saying

"Sold by Midland Safe and lock co Minneapolis Minn. "

Does anyone have any knowledge of safes that can help enlighten me. I would like to try and sell it. If that doesn't work maybe donate it to a historical society or museum. Any suggestions?

I have the same safe! At least it looks the same. Mine works fine and is about 75 years old. I paid $100 for it a few years back and asked a locksmith what it was worth. He said at the time a bit more than I paid. Of course he did want to sell me the new $2000 model...

In non working condition I wouldnt think it would be worth much since parts are probably scarce.

However I would try to find an enthusiast who likes old safes to fix it or buy it from you. Typically older locksmiths will have knowledge or might be themselves a safe guy.

I would think a good starting point would be to roll it onto a scale and figure what it would be worth as scrap metal. Most of the new ones are heavy enough I would think an old overbuilt one like that would have some weight to it.

That is what I was actually thinking about doing. I was thinking of cutting it up for the plate steel if nobody makes me an offer or wants it.

It might not be worth much in scrap.

I had an old one like that, it was filled with concrete between the 1/4" plates.

It was similar(but smaller) and I sold it for $75. I was happy to get it out of the garage. I showed the buyer how to make the combo whatever he wanted. Very easy to do.

If you have a free paper in your area (or craigs list etc) list it for free.

I have an old commercial safe with a broken door that I tipped on it's side, put onto a rolling cart, and now use as my welding/grinding/hammering workbench. It works great!

Hey thanks for the idea. I need a welding table. I might try and gut the inside and break the concrete out ant move the wheels to the side. Oo.

There is about enough steel to make it about twice as long also.
