I have a mystery on my hands. I thought about it today thats why I bring it up. Last summer I'm driving down the freeway about 65-70 mph pulling about 7K on a trailer in overdrive. I should've not been driving that fast with a load , but oh well. Anyway, I heard a loud boom similar to a tire blowing out. It was so loud and powerfull that I felt it in the cab. I felt the vibration in the steering wheel. It scared the crap out of me so I pulled over and first checked my pants then my truck and trailer. I found no blown tires and the truck was still running. I got back on the freeway and noticed that I lost a bit of power. So I dropped my load and went to the dodge dealer, but they couldn't find nothing. So, I went to the cummins dealer, hooked it up to diagnostics and nothing. By the way, my truck was pretty much stock( 98. 5 24v with an automatic 45k)at the time except for a 4" cat back and a free flow air filter. They strapted it on the dyno and it was puting out 160 rwhp. It seemed kinda low so the tech. changed the fuel filter and picked up another 20hp. Anyway they couldn't find nothing wrong with the truck, the after cooler looked fine with no busted connections. Its been almost a year and the truck runs fine. Just thought I'd throw that at ya guys, maybe someone knows whats up or had a similar experience. Thanks.

I have a friend who had the same problem. I cant remember exactly but it had to do with the anti-lock brakes and the trailer. He installed a brake controller and no more problems. He actually thought his truck had blown up. Good luck and maybe someone can explain better what I described.

I figure the dealer would catch the hose being they looked at the intercooler. Egt's do skyrocket after a blown hose,I know lol. A meltdown would have probably have happened by now.

Is it possible that maybe a big rig blew a tire near you. I've seen a few big rig blowouts on the freeway and they sound like a bomb going off, sometimes so loud that it seems like it's coming from your vehicle. Just a thought. .

The same thing happened to me. It was the hose connecting the turbo to the intercooler and I had to crawl under the truck to see it. Just check your hoses well and you should find the culprit.

The dealer said they ran a boost test and that everything was fine. I took the tech for a ride and he also agreed that the truck accelerated slow after 60mph in overdrive. I mean really slow, the speedometer barely moved. Normally I'd step on it and the truck would accerlerate with ease. Cummins said that it was putting out normal hp on the dyno 180 rw. The cummins tech said it might have been a fluc. Maybe my truck sensed the vibration and went into limp mode for a while, if thats possible.

Now I have a chip and the truck runs stronger than ever. It accelerates awsome in overdrive. My boost gauge came in yesterday, now waiting for my egt gauge and pillar, so I can see what's really going on inside that engine. My transmission runs cool with the new cooler and gauge I installed last summer.

Too much information!

If it is not broke, don't fix it!

This TDR forum is useful, but it can also cause unwarranted anxiety to people that are addicted to the TurboDieselRegister!

Don't get me wrong; I love this forum, but, I also realize that

most readers are paranoid about their vehicals so any little glitch will cause them to freak out and call the dealership who sold them the car!

We Heard it go BoooooM TOO

My wife and I were on a trip up north last year and got an egg on one of my tires so I changed it and put the bad tire back under the truck.

Later that day I had a flat on the trailer I was pulling so I had it changed. Well on the way home my wife and I Heard it go BoooooM and she went off (oh no not again) :--) We pull over and look and all tires are good so we keep going and make it home. The next day I drop the spare to get it replaced and the hole side of it was blown out  Thats what we heard go BOOOOOM.

:D

Same thing when they decellerate!

Sometimes witnesses discribe a flash of color or a gust of air. Who really knows?

I've heard of this happening when a guy was being chased by a jealous husband. The boom was a shotgun going off. Have you left any parts out of your story? :-laf

When those Big Rig tires go, even at 50 yards away, it sounds like it is happening to you. I have heard it several times. Makes you want to take cover.

I hear they kill tire guys regularly so they changed the way you bead em. They are in a cage so the pieces cant get you if they blow when they are being beaded.

I seen a guy that got bit by a little old subaru tire. Hit the ceiling in the shop. The ceiling was about 18ft. Broke his arm and bruised some ribs. Put him outta work for 3 months.
