because I was told they were only for manual transmission trucks. Is this true? If not, please tell me... I'll go put that sucker on right now! Any help is greatly appreciated!
I think the elbow is for manual trucks only, but for auto trucks I think you have to use something called a J hook/turnbuckle to keep the wastegate closed. Maybe someone with an auto will chime in. But without something to diable the wastegate your EGT's might get a little high. BTW you should love the difference with the EZ!!
I thought the turnbuckle trick was to disable the wastegate by keeping it open? No?
Dixie Dawg- With no other mods on your rig did you notice an
immediate improvement in performance? Was acceleration and power noticeably improved through the entire rpm range (i. e. from a standstill can you notice more power) or was power improved only in the 'meat' (1500-2000 rpm range) as I've read
elsewhere here? I don't tow anything so improved towing capability is not what I'm after, simply MORE POWER! Thanks for any input you can provide! I THINK I NEED AN EZ!! HELP ME LAWD!
The turnbuckle is the way to go. I tried a turnbuckel with a spring but the spring was not strong enough. Now I have just the turnbuckel. Went from 18psi boost to 29psi. I did not notice any aditional power with the extra boost. My EGTs were fine before the turnbuckle. The turnbuckle did lower the EGTs. I don't think you MUST have the extra boost unless you have bigger injectors along with the EZ.
It's worth doing just to watch the boost gauge jump up to 29.
All I've did was hook up the 3 wires from the box, didn't do anything else. Have I installed properly? I have the instructions from Edge... but they didn't make a whole lotta sense to me, but not much does these day. .
You did it right... . the rest is just the auto version of the boost elbow... .
It only disables the wastegate to allow the turbo to build more boost.
My EZ works great without all of that, and my egts stay well within exceptable range.
I am trying to make more boost to prepare for new injectors soon to be coming... . I've lost 1 turnbuckle already, but it didn't seem to fit quite right in the beginning..... 22shell didn't fit... . I still prefer the shell idea of blocking off the hardline... . just need to find the right way... .
I cannot seem to get a straight answer to this question! Yes, I've searched the posts but cannot seem to find one that fits my exact situation (Automatic, no towing), so one more time!!

I have almost the exact same truck... even the color is the same...
YES there is a HUGE difference with the EZ and nothing else...
Empty it runs great throughout the rpm range... . it is a different truck... . (I've souped up my 69 mustang a few times, and this is the most dramatic change I've seen... . I compare it to my engine swap... . 302 to 351... . VERY NOTICABle!!!!)
Beware it is VERY ADDICTIVE!!!! I'm already planning for more.....
Have to make those cocky suckers in the BMW's cry!!!!!
Yes, I did notice more power from standstill, and a nice puff of smoke. However, I don't feel I should be one to advice you, as I'm still not sure I'm getting the full benefit from the EZ because I don't have the elbow installed, and don't think I can make over 20 lbs of boost without it.
THerman, Dixie Dawg- Thanks a lot for the input. Looks like I gotta go spend me $550. 00 now! I got the bug and I suspect it only gets worse from here!
Dixie Dawg- I can tell you from reading many posts on the topic that the boost elbow does not have to be installed on the Auto but that a pyro gauge to monitor EGT's is recommended because the EGT's can be driven up quickly with just the EZ; it has also been said that until the wastegate is dealt with (i. e. with the turnbuckle) to try not to lay all over it constantly, get into it from time to time but don't go crazy due to the EGT issue with the EZ.
Probably also a good idea to prolong cool down time before shut down to ensure you don't cook oil in the Turbo until you know the EGT (read: gauges) and/or have the wastegate disabled. Thanks again.
Should be easy to find a used EZ on TDR. $375 is what I got mine for. Lots of guys upgrade to a Comp. I don't go crazy with my EZ for fear of killing the transmission. In fact, I drive it more mellow than before I add the EZ.
I put an ez on a few months ago. Yes it definitely improved throughout I have been modifying vehicles of various types for 25 years and I would have to say that it is probably the most bang for the buck of anything I have ever done before and certainly the easiest. 10 minutes or less and your done.
I've been afraid to buy the EZ used because I've seen stories on this board where the EZ goes 'dead' or on the fritz. I don't know how often this happens or what if any warranty I'd have on the unit if I bought it used, don't know if just coughing up the price of a new unit would be worth the comfort of calling up Edge or Piers and hopefully having them replace it for me as I've seen done for some fellow memebers here. Thoughts?
Dr. Kayak- Thanks for the input, I've seen and read in several places that the transmission ought to be able to handle 'just' the EZ with no problems, only when you get into bigger injectors that the transmission needs upgrading to handle it.
Fellas, It seems this thread has gotten off topic. Can somebody tell me IF I need to install any kind of elbow, and what are the advantages would be over what I have now? Am I seeing over 20 lbs of boost now without the elbow installed, or am I getting cut off at/under 20? Thanks.
The elbow you have won't work on the automatic transmission vehicles... (they use a different turbo)
If you don't tow heavy and aren't drag racing... enjoy what you have... don't change... .
If you want more... . find the turnbuckle thread and follow that advice... . That willl allow you to make close to 30psi boost... and will lower your egts...
I don't have the elbow or the turnbuckle right now... . EGT's are fine... . max boost 20. 5psi
