Well, It had to happen... ...

I recently had my truck in for a faulty mapp sensor, and the mechanic said the lift pump was making noise so they replaced it. Of course they didn't have the sensor,or the pump in stock so it took 3 trips !! . I told the parts guy that with all the failures of the lift pumps he should have one on the shelf at all times, but he just looked  . I told him i'd be needing another one in the future,so he might as well order it now. The part number of the pump they put on is 5080885AA. Is this the latest/greatest pump available? I'm just so thrilled to be part of such an elite group of lift pump failure victims !!:{ And just think i joined at only 23,956 miles !!

Bummer. :( I thought that having an 02 would relieve this problem. I have about the same mileage as you, except in kilometers (36000) so now I have this to worry about with a long trip planned in June.

Well, to start with I think you got the old lp. I think the most current design is 3990105.

A lot of guys have moved it to the tank (see sig) and changed the lp lines. There are tons of post about that.

I went a bit further and expect 100k out of the lp, but always carry a spare.

Currently 28k miles and testing my fuel system theory - Clean water free fuel delivered at the lp level (vertically) so it does not have to suck and the check valve (the part in the lp that is the major source of failure) never allowed to open.

No extra pusher pumps, no weird concoctions of plumbing, just the OEM stock lp put in a position it can do what it was designed to do and fed the very best way I can.

Actually he has the Mopar part#5080885AA (98-02). The 3990105 (00-02) is the Cummins part#. Both are the same units. :D

Opps, somehow I never wrote the Mopar lp part number down in my parts book.

Sorry for the mis information in the post, and so noted in my parts book.

I have not been back to a Dodge dealer since my first oil change.

BillH,

That's terrific. I can hardly wait for that to happen... ... ...

I hope they caught it in time before it did any damage to the injection pump. My f. p. gauge should be here today.

I guess I must be one of the lucky ones, nearing 140,000 miles

and I havent replaced the lift pump, turbo, nothing but normal maintenance. I did finally set the valves about 2,000 miles ago, the engine was getting a bit noisy. I have owned and driven various cummins engines for thirty years and 2. 5 million miles. Enjoy all the information you folks post. My Truck is a 1999 Dodge 3500 ram quad cab dually 4wd, pulling various trailers from a car hauler, used to pull an off Road jeep, to a 37' 5th wheel. thanks again for all the good information, Bill Loewenhagen, Stoddard, WI.

Bert is that you?

Nice to hear from ya! we missed your ol blue chevy at the pulls last year, where ya been:-laf . Sorry to hear about your lift pump problems but its a simple fix. Remember me im the guy that runs with Allen Mann he has the red super stock (Money For Nothin). I have the blue & silver dodge that i pull with. If ya come to some pulls this year ill show ya how i fixed my lift pump problems.

Kurt

YEAH IT'S ME.....

Kurt,

Had to take last season off,as we were building a house. No time for the pulls when you're picking out tile, windows, carpet, bla, bla, bla  I'll be back this season, and Tim's working on the motor as we speak. Tell Allen that he better get ready because ANOTHER WISCONSIN truck is gonna take all the money this year !!:-laf We also built a nice shop too (should have mentioned that first). See ya at the pulls. :p

Bert,

Hey glad to hear you are gunna be pullin again & you better be ready for us because Allen took 2nd this year in points just behind Bob. Not to bad for a 2nd year rookie in the super stock class ;) . We thought we had last year in the bag until we lost a motor :{ . Wait till ya see my dodge go down the track :D . Let me play with yours & ill make her run like your super stock. Talk to ya later.

Kurt

Kurt,

I thought i might as well get the B. S. started early this year. :D

Tim told me about the "twins",and it sounds pretty impressive.

My fuel pressure gauge showed up today so at least i can watch for the next L. P. failure. . Later,Bert
