I never thought I’d do this at my ripening age, but... ya just never can say never, I guess. The dark a. m. hours on Sunday morning just past found me angling across the top of Georgia on a favorite piece of blacktop that crosses and recrosses a lake system. At a remote stop light, a big, white Ford PS pulls up next to me. I glance over at him, and in the glow of a mess of guages, I see him giving my ‘95 2500 CTD the once over. Now mine is a mechanically bone-stock 12v auto; I’ve been putting the money in bringing back her beauty. The Ford has no doubt been touched with an aggressive wrench: there’s the matter of all those guages and the huge open exhaust curling out in front of the duallies--no constipation on that one.
After giving each other the once-over, we sedately pull away from the green light and head down the arrow-straight highway. Although I’m acting my somewhat exalted age, this whole situation is getting to be just too much for Ford-boy. He pulls alongside me on my left and starts jumping ahead about one length and dropping back, jumping ahead and dropping back. He does this three times before it starts to work on me, and I catch him on a fall-back and slap the feed to the floor... and everything just goes right! The transmission catches a perfect wave of a downshift, the turbo is right there, and I must have been in the sweet spot of the power curve, because I just grease away from this guy! A millisecond after I poured it on I heard his straight pipe bellow its rage, and I see him kinda jump, but I’m pulling away!
We get up to the high **’s mph (5th Amendment), and we’re coming up on one of the bridges over the water. We both sensibly back out of it, but, by dangies, he lays back. Seems he’s cased his colors and left the field for the day!
Boy-lemme-tell-ya-what... that was a screaming rush! Now I GET IT! Now I understand why you guys BOMB ‘em so.
But noooooo... I’m not gonna start pouring money into this beast; I’m not going to find myself lurking around dark highways late at night, looking for fresh Fords. That’s just not me... nope, uh-uh, no way. But... I guess ya just never can say never...
