Competition Pulling advice

Competition Drive Shaft Loops

well since no one has posted the results of the sled pull up at the BullyDog event I will tell you I got beat by a ford flatbed, 100 gallon propane tanked, illegal hitch setup and some very funny scale work and full pull distance math---did this beat me --

NO(well the full pull math did)--my truck decided to run like bat gwano at the most inopportune time---either new injectors or my pre-fuel pump filter clogging sent me to the losers pen(probably the later the more I think of it)--the filter was totally clogged no more than 2 miles from Pocatello the next day after the event and the pump has been very noisy for a couple of weeks--I figured it was going to die after two years of no maintenance of anykind) yep no filter changes or anything --my test for my fuel system)---

anyway here's some oddities and things to consider--

1) ford truck is weighed at 9400lbs, but somehow it gets down to 9000lbs without leaving the scale--the owner told me so---I didn't care and still don't--but it's funny to look back--

I weighed in at 8550lbs--all time high

2) when sled pull guys ask if you want to have the sled set up a gear--do it--one run is always the best--I didn't and it cost me

3) make sure everyone is aware of the full pull distance--I thought it was 300' others thought it was 286'--track had 300' marker

4) make sure if you draw a # for pulling order you know where you stand against you competitors--I drew a larger # but went first--interesting--

ok so I hook up to the sled and make sure all the buttons are pushed right and double check--try and build my normal amount of boost off the line--but it ain't happening--I must of sat there for 15-20 seconds--well it was probably shorter but it was way longer than usual--any way no boost--so I go for it--and I pull it out the gate--YES--OUT THE GATE!!! 302'-- I even stopped as they didn't want you way out the gate cuz of gravel--anyway I knew I was in trouble as the truck wasn't running right--way to sluggish---

ford guy pulls and I figured he went out the gate--he didn't, but I didn't know that--he pulled 291' and is stopped by the sled--

so back in line I go, thinkin' I'm in a pull off--had I known I would have said something to get a clarification--but I didn't know I out pulled him---

again I hook up to the sled--unbeknownst to me the truck is smoking white--not good--injector not seating(can you say fuel filter)--can't build boost so again I go for it and the truck is gutless it doesn't kick until I'm at 100' and I know I'm dead--pull 236'--sled has been setup a notch---

ford guy pulls 258' I think and he is declared the winner

really it's my fault for not getting rulings on stuff--but from now on I think I'll have a two way radio in the truck to make sure about pulling distances---

the announcer never even announced a full pull by the ford guy on his first try--

Sleddy I will have you know that I'm world famous--- some Idaho radio station's announcer interviewed me on the radio and said so right before the interview--I should have punched him in the teeth--when he said that I knew I was jinxed --oh well it was a lot of fun--funny how you learn little things that seem so insignificant at the time---

I don't know how there got to be a 9000lb class--everything I saw prior was 8200lbs---

any way I got tater-totted--please be nice to me as I'm in a fragile state right now and could easily start tipping a few beers with the slightest push--not really I don't drink--chris

Chris, I got up the leave right after you waxed the guy the first run abd then they annouced the pull off saying they had stopped him early(total BS). With the speed you had going you could have pulled that sled to the fence on the first run. There was some fishy stuff going on even on the dyno the day before.

I guess you could call this a home court advantage.

Chris it was great to meet and talk with you, I'm sorry I didn't stick to say good bye.

Some times if you pull first, you have the option to rehook and scratch your first pull. Most generally one would do this for various reasons-wrong gear, pulled on wrong side of track... etc.

Also the track officials sometimes will decide to reset the sled after the first pull if they think the sled isnt heavy enough. They do this to keep every body from pulling it home with them (or to keep them within the 300'). This sounds like what happened in this case. Just about anywhere you go they have a floating finish. I pull 306 and you pull 309, you win and I get second. There would be no pull off.

I am not making excuses for anyone, and I wasnt even there, these are just some ideas that could have happened.

It is too bad no body explained things to you as they were happening.

I declare shananagans!

Shananagans!!

(anyone remember that South Park episode?)

Sounds fishy to me... . very fishy.

I wonder if you had Bully Pooch parts on your truck - you would have pulled better?

Matt

yes I have BullyDog parts---

I'm positive there was no sled resetting between his pull and mine--they did reset the sled after our first pull though

I beat him the first pull--I just didn't know it--if the full pull mark was indeed 286' then this is moot--I thought it was 300' and I'd think so did most everyone else--

as for the 2nd pull I'm not sure I could've re-pulled or not--wish I would've asked--another thing to put in the ol' noggin for the next time it happens--

I'm just tryin to tell people these things so they won't happen to them--nothing more---chris

I should have put a note above that I was just kidding about the parts - my bad.

It is very disappointing to have a bad yank - especially when you work hard to get ready for it.

Heck, I drove all the way to Muncie to make an attempt to pull for the first time.

Besides... . If we never screwed up - we'd never learn how to make improvements.
