I pin it open every time. If I can’t remember to close my hitch, and check it, before leaving I probably shouldn’t be towing on the road anymore. Just sayin...

Not sure why you would pin it open but the only drops are a couple that were not used to the hitch and previously had hitches that latch when backed into.

Like I said I padlock mine so when I unhitch or get ready to hitch I place the padlock on top of the toolbox and it's right there when I back into the hitch get out to finish closing the handle and grab the padlock. Less possible things to F-up your day the better!

Handle is closed and LOCKED the plates are touching and the MASSIVE 1" thick machined jaws are closed around the kingpin. It's visually inspected and ready for the road, NO pull test!

I pin it open to unhook and generally just leave it. It can’t close on me if pinned. If it’s not pinned and I’m getting ready to hitch I’ll pin it too. It’s an easy reach with my wheel to wheel boards.

NEVER is a very strong statement, and I’d say nearly impossible to justify.

"It can’t close on me if pinned." This is true, if the truck is pressing back towards the RV the handle won't stay open.

Bottom line YOU understand this, some don't.

hey guys hope everybody is well I've got to go back to shipshewana Indiana to pick up another RV I do have a question though for the Tek experts here for a light travel trailer say less than 10000 pounds do I have to use to tow haul mode or can I just use the regular transmission setting so do I have to use the tow haul mode or can I use the regular transmission setting to save some fuel does that make sense and will that be the correct thing to do thank you guys????????

I use TH for anything above about 4K lbs. That’s when I start to prefer the TH programming.

I wouldn’t consider a 10,000 pound trailer behind an 8,500 pound truck light.

In my opinion, leave it in T/H, higher RPM will help in milage due to being easier on the truck to pull the load. Cruising speed should be same RPM in T/H or not, unless you lock out sixth or even fifth gear. Climbing silght grades turn off sixth, steep grades let the transmission pick your gear. Remember, T/H extends the shifting point through the RPM ranges, but will be the same RPM while cruising. This would be a good time to experiment with what works for your truck. In my manual G56 equiped 3500 C&C, this is how I would shift with a load. Running the RPM's higher before shifting into the next gear helps in moving the load, and is the same strategy with the Aisin.

I know it would not be worth doing any adjustments but it's amazing how many people would hook and go and not think there is anything wrong with the setup! I am betting front axle is 1,000# heavier than the rear.

YES the B&W is damn near idiot proof! One thing that leads to dropping a B&W is pinning the handle open, NEVER and I mean NEVER do that!

I NEVER do a pull test as all that is needed is to do a VISUAL test. Kingpin and hitch plates touching Check, handle closed pinned and locked check, 1" thick jaws are closed around king pin check, now get in and drive away.
I guess any adjustment is done here....but I’m not sure there’s THAT much adjustment left. It wasn’t my RV.....and it pulled great the entire trip.

Being it wasn't yours, it wouldn't mater, I would make sure the stands were retracted all the way up though. Looks like you have one adjustment (lowering the pin box) but you'll lose one of the five bolts. 4ea of a good grade 1/2" bolt would work for the pin box.

The RV appears to be VERY nose low so if you were towing it much I would as suggested lower pinbox and go to quality bolts as in grade 8.

No doubt it towed well as it's a fifth wheel and your truck has a lot of meat on the road!

I am guessing the hitch head supports are at a fixed height? If the are adjustable that is a great place to start.

The pin box is only good for 18K GVW, and at 42', the Liepert frame is probably undersized and maybe the reason for the undercarriage damage.

I’ve not said anything yet......just been waiting for comments to see if anyone noticed anything odd in either of those pictures.

Hi Greg,

I'm going to throw a guess at it: Is their a sixth bolt missing at the bottom left of the pin box? Can't see in the holes, but I think there is another adjustment to lower the pin at least two inches?

Cheers, Ron
