Had one of those sleepless nights and read this entire thread. I was educated, entertained and no it did not put me to sleep. This seems like a great forum and I look forward to interacting as a new Ram owner. Stuart hang in there and stay in touch we may have more in common than you realize! Thanks to all the others for your wisdom. As an old guy headed to retirement we all have a lot to learn and some wisdom to share. There is a proverb that says "there is safety in the multitude of counselors"

Welcome to the TDR, never a dull moment around here.

I already forgot if he ever did wind up with a 68RFE?

Welcome to TDR, somewhere during this thread I bought a new CTD 3500 SRW HO, thats how old the thread is. Fill out your signature so all can see your truck, it'll come in handy when asking questions.

Who said here on the form that I could use my propane heat in the RV while not being attached to shore power in other words somehow using I'm not sure about this the inverter and using the trucks power somehow to power the blower on the heat I'm not sure let me know guys cuz somebody it said that in the earlier post that you can you use the key in the RV like every couple hours or something like that did I hear that?????

I thought you had to be attached to the 50 amp with 35 amp shore power to power your heater in your RV give me some info to your guys cuz if I can do that and have my truck providing some power to the RV that might be something I can do but yeah it's only propane not the nothing else no air cooler just propane heat????

If I'm understanding your talk to text right, you want to know if you can use your furnace to heat your RV, without being connected to shore power? Yes, it runs off your 12 VDC batteries, but there are exceptions to this, is your AC a Heat Pump? A heat pump can heat or cool your space and would run off of 115V AC, however most RV AC's are strait cool, with some having strip heat (which is 115V AC), that can act as a secondary heat source. But for the most part your RV more likely has a furnace independant of the AC system. Your furnace should be ducted to the sealed area of your water tanks, as well as being ducted to your RV. But you will have to recharge your batteries at some point, if connected to your truck, it can drain those batteries as well.

Stuart,

Yes, you can run your propane heat that uses 12VDC fan motor without shore power. I ran mine for three days when we had regional power outage, but typically, would not go more than 24hrs. Check to see if you have one or two batteries in your RV. You need to be adding distilled water to them monthly, so need to know this.

I only kept truck connected to batteries for 24hours without running the truck. Your truck batteries should NEVER be run down with all the electronics.

Cheers, Ron

Did you get any walk thru with the RV purchase?

As stated, the furnace is 12V and runs off of the batteries. Shore power would be needed after a day or two, several factors to consider, to recharge the batteries with the converter. If you're keeping it at living temperature and only have a single 12V battery you may not even get 24 hours in that big RV.

I'll bet less than 5% of my camping has shore power, we run off the batteries almost exclusively.

If you want to get a small generator to assist for when you're without shore power I would recommend a Honda EU2200i. It will be enough AC power to run the converter, lights, and such.. just not the air conditioner. It's small, quiet, lightweight, and will last forever.

Stuart,

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: Your RV has a CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR, A SMOKE DETECTOR, AND A GAS DETECTOR. Recommend testing them every month. They can save your life. NOTE, if your wife uses canned hairspray, some use propane as a propellant... I couldn't figure out why my propane detector was going off. Fellow camper told me.

Use your SMART PHONE or laptop calendar a recurring monthly reminder to check detectors, tire condition, propane tank levels, and water leaks. I check tires EVERY day I travel with RV.

Cheers, Ron

Good advice here. Not only hairspray, but many aerosol products. I absentmindedly forgot to turn a projector off before spraying canned air to remove dust. The fan sucked it in and flames shot out the other side.

Stuart,

I believe you're going to find over time that you are going to spend more time and money on your RV trying to maintain it at an RV park in cold weather than the expense of having a 20amp electric run 400ft from your home. That's all it takes to keep batteries, tank heaters up. You can even run one AC when prepping for trip loading it on hot days.

Just saying....

Cheers, Ron
