I need to change my fan clutch on the White Obsession. A crescent wrench is too wide. It takes a 36mm wrench.

The Manual give two part numbers they are probably thinner;

Snap-on #SP346 or

Cummins #2017DSP

According to my measurements I can use a wrench up to a 1/2" wide or thick.

Does anyone have one of these? I would like to borrow it if you have one. I will pay for the shipping both ways.

Thanks for you help.

You can use a 1 7/16 or 1 1/2 inch wrench also. I used the latter since I did not have the correct size. Little sloppy on the fit but it will work. Some guys have used a long drift and whacked it at the corners of the nut and it loosened up. You will need to use something to prevent the pulley from turning. I used a strap wrench for that since I did not have the barring tool either.

You can also buy the wrench from Sears and take it back after you are done for a refund. :D I don't mind taking advantage of Sears since a $100 torque wrench went bad with very little use after their 90 day warranty period was over... . no refund or exchange.

Doesn't the (big)hammer and drift method work? I thought I needed a special wrench, but a hammer and a scrap of steel bar worked well. Just hammer on the edge of the nut to loosen it. (remember it's a left-hand thread)

Big Bob - I used a crescent wrench when I took the fan off to do the KDP. I just removed several of the small screws that attach the hub to the fan clutch.

Just don't forget that the big nut is left-hand thread.

I made one from a 24 inch long piece of 1/4 mild steel plate about 3 inches wide. I just hack sawed out 1 7/16 out of it. Worked great but you'll need something to hold the pully with. I used an 18 inch pair of channel Locks.

I bought a set at NAPA for mine. I can't remember the price, but it wasn't too bad. It cam with a thin wrench and a thin "crows foot" type to hold the pump. I am in the Salem area and I can send it to you if you need. Just PM me the address and I will get it out in the mail, overnight if you want it soon.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. I didn't think about a hammer and punch or a air hammer. I think I will try those before I ask someone to send a wrench.

Probably won't be until this weekend before I can get to it.

Thanks again!Oo. Oo.

Bob, do you think your fan clutch had some to do with your problems of running too warm on your trip?

Piers mentioned to me the 12-valve radiators are copper while ours are aluminum. Copper cools better, but the radiator shop I just talked to said the aluminum ones cool just as good and recommended sticking with it. (they also mentioned they rarely see a Dodge Cummins come in with radiator problems with less than 150k where as the HD Chevy and Fords often fail as soon as 60K)

Vaughn,

I don't remember hearing the fan kick on while we were on vacation. It could very well be the problem. We'll find out Saturday when I change it.

rick,

I bought it at an auto parts store in Spokane, the name is Bert Sheilds Auto Parts. It's not a major chain, only one store.

I called NW Cummins, they didn't have one, called Napa, they didn't have on and wanted $139 for it. I called Bert Sheilds and they had on for $70. I jumped on it!

Cheap Wrench...

Go to the local hardware and get an adjustable spanner made for the nut on sink drains. Mine cost $5. 97. :D

I Got It! Thank guys for all your suggestions and help! I took Rockcrusher suggestion, only I used a steel flat bar about 2' long and a 3# maul! I didn't think I was making any headway, but I turned the fan and it screwed right off.

This is what I love about the board, everyone help and suggestions!

Vaughn,

I'll know over labor day weekend if this cures the overheating problem while towing. Kathy and I want to get away for a 4 day weekend with the travel trailer, just got to figure out where to go.

Thanks again, Big Bob
