Which Firestone air bags?

I'm not crazy. We are looking for a gooseneck camper, not a 5th wheel. I want to avoid the goose to 5th adaptors as well.

Do you know of any camper brands or manufacturers that make a solid good 'ol gooseneck hitch camper?

Reason being that we have two trucks in the family set up for gooseneck pulling, and we want them both to be able to tow the camper, and don't want to put new hitches in both trucks.

Thanks!

I'll email you some pics if I find them, but I built a gooseneck conversion for mine. It bolts up to the pin box and is an adjustable BullDog coupler. Works perfect and is more than stout. Made the box out of 1/4 plate and used 3/8 bar stock to brace it. I have watched it going down the road behind my 03 dually and it had minimal flex.

If you use a B&W turnover ball as your gooseneck, they make the 5th wheel companion that goes with it. It's a great rig for those who need both worlds. You are right in shying away from the gooseneck to 5th wheel conversions, that puts undue stress on the trailer frame, doesn't matter if you can see the flex or not, the stress is multiplied due to the length of the adapter.

A number of years ago you could order Holiday Rambler fifth wheels with an optional gooseneck hitch. The last ones I saw were in the late 80's, early 90's timeframe when I ordered a new one from a dealer. I don't know if they still offer that as an option, the company has gone through several owners since then. Worth checking to be sure...

My neighbor bought a new Holiday Rambler Presidential gvw 16,200 two years ago with the gooseneck hitch. The dealer removed the the fiver hitch and installed the gooseneck hitch. He loves it and has pulled it all over the country with no problems. He got tired of wrestleing the fiver hitch in and out of the truck bed. He just turns the B&W ball over now. :)

I removed the pinbox, cut out the pin and used the original pinbox to hold a gooseneck hitch. Probly about like Diesel nut, it sounds like..... My rig isnt very heavy, but the point that it hits the truck is now about 10" lower. It doesnt seem to have any adverse effects so far.

This pic is in my hidden readers rigs album, it was for another post reguarding what one should do with the OEM fuel line after a vulcan install, but you can make out the trailer hitch in the background. its not very good, but it shows the idea.

I (with reservations) put the heavier of the 2 adapters that Camping World sells on my 22,000# Travel Supreme when I broke down in Ga in in early Dec. because the guy I found to pull it home for me didn't have a 5th wheel. After looking at it & installing I was very impressed with the unit & had no concearns. It's rated at 7500# vertical & 30,000# GVW. The locking mech. on it works real nice also. You can check it out at http://www.colibert.com/products/index.asp

Here it is on my trailer:

Fellows, compare the cross-sectional area and amount of steel in the "crown" of a gooseneck versus a 5th wheel trailer. It's there for a reason - that being the increased forces the longer lever arm of a gooseneck design transfers into the frame.

Unless something significant is done to strengthen the pinbox and surrounding area of a 5th wheel trailer frame, any of these gooseneck "solutions" are an engineering crap shoot.

You will notice that some manufaturers of 5th wheels will actually state whether or not its rated for the adapter.

my uncle is a welder and he made a gooseneck adapter for mine,he made it where it bolts right up to the existing fithwheel, and welded a gooseneck coupler to the front, plus I gained about 3 to 4 inches out front!!!

You can get a real goose neck frame from KZ. The main reason I have a New Vision Sportster is the GN option. The frame is not an adapted 5th wheel frame, its actually quite different up front and the front cap is different too. The GN option rocks.
