I need a new clutch. Pilot bearing went out, input shaft wobbled and took out the clutch hub, at least that's what I think happened. It was the second clutch and probably had about 150,000 miles on it. OEM 12 1/4'' clutch. Truck has over 300,000 miles.

I'm rebuilding the transmission while it's out. NV4500, 5th gear came off 6 years ago, slid it back on then and spot welded it.

The Input shaft was damaged due to a bad pilot bearing and damaged the flywheel also. Wobbling input, damaged the front of the main-shaft, and 5th gear was now loose and wobbling, rocking back and forth. Wouldn't have been long and the splines would have stripped. Hey, ... it went 6 years.

I'm upgrading to a new 1 3/8 cryoed input shaft, updated main shaft, counter shaft and a few gears and bearings.

Now I need a new flywheel and clutch. I've been looking at South Bend and Valair.

This is a work truck, usually loaded with tools, and some of the time pulling trailers. Flatbead trailer with skid-loader, 8,000 lbs. 16 ft dump trailer, when loaded, approximately 15,000 lbs. I plow snow in the winter. No racing or competition pulling.

This is a 1 ton 4x4 dually running a smarty on #5, with a 4'' exhaust and I have some RV275's to put in.

Valair recommended their organic dual disc.

Peter at South Bend recommended a single disc, 13125-OK-HD w/ an 1 3/8 center hub and stock hydraulics would be fine.

Just looking for a good, reliable, well behaving clutch.

Anybody using the SB 13125-OK-HD? or Dual Discs? Any thoughts? Recommendations?

How about Amsoil in the transmission?

If you got 150k out of the stock 12. 25, upgrading to a 13" single disk seems about right. Trust Peter's recommendation.

I just put the OK HD in my 07. I assume it's the same as what you would have. Being a g56 conversion I got the new flywheel and hydraulics. so far seems good. The pedal is stiffer than it was but seems to be about like the Con-o with stock hydraulics on my '00 I previously had.

Thanks for the replies, this is what I wanted to hear.

WOT, glad to hear yours is working well for you.

I've also been considering the SB 13125-OFEK. I've read some guys saying that they hold well, but can be a little grabby when backing a trailer up an incline.
I'm leaning to the South Bend clutch, because I've read so many good posts about them, and the company's support.

Anybody know about using Amsoil in the transmission?

not sure about amsoil in the trans, but mine has a south bend dual disc. It releases pretty quick, took a little bit to get used to, other than that its nice. Havent tested it with any big loads yet

I think I've answered my own question about SDD 3250-5, 6, GK.

3250-5 is for 5 speed NV4500
3250-6 is for 6 speed NV5600
3250-G is for 6 Speed G56
And K represents w/ flywheel

I'm still reading different posts and blogs about the different clutches. Interesting reading. This SB SDD3250-5 sounds real nice.

That's what I've got in the G-56 version. Reverse can be a bit grabby in just that situation. Why didn't the G-56 and NV5600's come with a granny reverse?

Well, ... Peter, at South Bend, did recommend the single disc, 13125-OK-HD to me.

I suppose a guy gets used to whatever they have, they just learn how to use it.

My OEM stock clutch was so easy to use, it was easier than a lot of cars I've driven. In fact, when my daughter was 15, I taught her how to drive stick with my truck. I picked her up from school and on the way home I asked if she wanted to learn how to drive stick, ... she said SURE! We were on country back roads. She jumped in, I told her what to do, and she did great. She didn't jerk or kill it once. My wife called me to see if I remembered to pick her up, I said yes, ... and shes driving my truck home. My wife panicked, "OH HONEY! HANG UP, and pay attention to her driving!! My daughter laughed and drove us home just fine. That's what Mom's do, ... they worry.

Anyhow still deciding on a clutch, ... and thanks for the replies.

WOT, ... you are the only one I've read about, with any experience with a South Bend OK HD. That might be the one to go with.

Regcabguy, ... I see you are from San Diego. 6 years ago, I worked in the LA area for half the winter. I took my wife and 3 of my kids along. We went down to San Diego a couple times, Zoo and Sea World. One morning in February, it was 75, green, flowers in bloom, gentle breeze, ... and my wife said. "OH I'M JUST LOVING THIS!" I said, "Yeah, and I just checked the weather back home, It's -15 degrees below zero, only 90 degrees colder. " She replied, "You are moving me here, ... aren't you?" My wife didn't want to come back to North Central Iowa, 20 miles from Minnesota.

When we came home, the first part of April, it was in the 80's in LA. We drove straight through, at home it was in the 20's and we were greeted by an 8'' snow fall. She wasn't happy!

Driving my dually Dodge in that LA traffic??? First 2 weeks were white knuckle driving, ... after that I was driving like everyone else. I still didn't get used to motorcycles cutting lanes, that's dangerous! After we were home, and I was driving during, "Rush Hour Traffic," I laughed, ... and thought , this is nothing! There's alot of people out there!! {LA Metro area. } As much as the whole upper mid-west combined! Anyhow, I like rural living and I don't mind winter. My wife???? She couldn't pack fast enough.

I know, ... what's this have to do with my clutch?, ... absolutely nothing. Just memories of Southern California.

Great Clutch and the flywheel comes with the ball bearing great upgread I have used a lot of them with no problems.

Dieseldemon, ... you said, Great Clutch. Which one have you used? Was it used for daily driving, work, pulling trailers, competition. Just curious.

This is my second SB. The first one, not remembering which one single, was a bugger backing the 5th wheel. Now, with their double, much better, but still can be a pain if you try to feather it in reverse. No way I can make this set slip under load though.

Yeah,I was born here. The weather spoils me but we do enjoy getting away. We did a 3K run from SD to,Bristlecone Ancient Forest,Lake Tahoe,Lavatubes,Crater Lake,Ellensburg,Wa,and down the west coast of Oregon via Hwy 1 to home. Stunning scenery and this too has absolutely nothing to do with our clutches.

That would have been a beautiful drive!! I love the Ocean and the Mountains! Every time I go on about them, my wife asks, "So why?, ... do we live in Iowa?, ... in the middle of a corn field?" I just say, "Because it's home. "

I almost moved to Huntington Beach, Ca. , after High School, to go to diving school. I've always wanted to Scuba Dive. That was many moons ago. That's been, ... married for over 40 years, and 9 kids ago.

And right now we are in the middle of a snow storm. [From the internet, Clear Lake, Iowa - Winter Storm Warning:]
* STORM TOTAL SNOW/ICE ACCUMULATIONS... TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 8 TO 12 INCHES WITH THE LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS THROUGH MONDAY MORNING.
* WINDS/VISIBILITY... NORTHWEST TO NORTH WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO NEAR 45 MPH ARE EXPECTED TONIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING.

My wife just told me she's been chatting with one of her friends in LA, and told me she's been mowing her yard. My wife just sighed, ... and said, "Oh well ... ..... "

I have a daughter that lives in Washington, she wants me to come out, and take me into the Mts. there, and over to Seattle and Victoria Island. She says, "Dad, you'd love it here!"

I would love to pack up my motorcycle and go on a ride out west with a couple of my boys and their bikes also.

My wife tells me, "You have to make Tomorrow, ... today, or it will always stay tomorrow. "

Yeah I know it has nothing to do about clutches, ... but it's interesting to talk about!

So, the dual disk clutch works better than the single disk did? interesting, I've been kicking around the SB SDD3250-5

hsmith, ... so you're from Texas? One of my boys lives in Fort Worth, Texas. He's been trying to get me to move to Texas. He loves it there.

I agree. You really don't need the twin disk in your application unless you just want one. They are expensive, heavy and the throwout bearing will only last just so long anyway.

As far as getting off topic and taking a walk around the barn... . most of us do it:-laf

Clear Lake, IA! (adding to the off topic conversation) You don't own the infamous corn and bean field there, do you?

Several years ago my wife and I walked a well trodden path along a fence line on some IA farmer's corn or bean field to the site where Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens died in February 1959. A small monument was built on the site and apparently the farmer who owns the land doesn't mind tourists hiking along the edge of his field. At least there were no no trespass signs.

We also visited the Surf Ball Room nearby. Some still say the music died in a field near Clear Lake, IA.

Yeah, ... I'm kinda thinkin it would be over kill to go with a dual disk. Actually, the OEM 12 1/4'' has always done fine for me. There's been a couple times the clutch slipped. One time I was pulling a Ford F250 Ext cab 4X4 out of the ditch. He slid off the interstate down an embankment, and was stuck up to his axles, 50'-60' off the road. It was a frosty morning in the spring and frost was going out of the ground. I could smell the burnt clutch afterwards, I had it in 1st gear 4X4 Hi side, I should have had it in the 4X4 Low side.

Another time I was backing a trailer with 5-6 ton of dirt on it, and the trailer tires sunk into the ground while trying to maneuver the trailer. I was feathering the clutch a little both times, that probably is what caused the burning smell I assume.

Probably just upgrading to a heavy duty 13'' single disk organic would be about right.

As far as getting off topic, one of my boys told me that sometimes, when he talks to me, he likes to see how many rabbit trails he can get me to run down. I told him, "Thanks for pickin on me," he said, "Ahh, you make it so easy Dad, you're known for talking," and laughed.

Nick, one of my daughters lived in Apache Junction, AZ. for a couple years. She always wanted me come out there and see the desert with her, unfortunately, I never did. She now lives in Minneapolis, MN. At least that's only a couple hours away and I get to see the grandkids.

I appreciate your input on the clutch, Thanks!

Gary
