Clear Lake, IA! (adding to the off topic conversation) You don't own the infamous corn and bean field there, do you?
Several years ago my wife and I walked a well trodden path along a fence line on some IA farmer's corn or bean field to the site where Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens died in February 1959. A small monument was built on the site and apparently the farmer who owns the land doesn't mind tourists hiking along the edge of his field. At least there were no no trespass signs.
We also visited the Surf Ball Room nearby. Some still say the music died in a field near Clear Lake, IA.
Harvey, no I don't own that field, but it's about 1 1/2 miles east of me. Sometimes we see people back there at that site. I live right here and I've never been there, go figure, and yes it is open to the public. They just don't want you to trample their crops. They just expect people to show a little respect for their property.
The Buddy Holly celebration, was Feb 2nd. The Winter Dance Party, they have at the Surf Ballroom draws people from all over the country, there's even people that come over from England. The restaurants during that time get a lot of people dressed up in 50's attire, ladies wearing poodle skirts, guys with their hair slicked back, wearing tee shirts, leather jackets and blue jeans.
One of the highlights of small town rural America.
