Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) I need expert advice Re: Replacement Thermostat

I have been trying to buy a P#3954194 180 thermostat. Evidently this is not available any more. I ordered the above P# from a Cummins parts supplier and got a 3967195 180 t-stat.

I posted some pics below to illustrate my concerns.



The thermostat on the right is the original one out of my 2001. 5 truck. The t-stat on the left is the new #3967195, super cedes #3954194. Base on the size of the opening on the new t-stat being almost half the size of the original, I am wondering will this cause flow problems in my truck engine at high loads. I don't know what application this new thermostat is for. Also the lack of a spring loaded block off plate on the bottom of the new t-stat worries me as well. I believe this blocks off the opening in the top of the cyl head when the t-stat opens.



Also I have a new P#3946849 installed in the truck at this time. (NOT PICTURED BELOW) This t-stat in the truck is a 190 degree and has an even larger opening than the original one that came out of my truck.



I am really afraid to use the 3967195 180 t-stat in my truck.

It looks like it is made for a totally different application.



Does anyone know what application the 3954194/3967195 is used for?



I need the opinion of some of you ISB gurus, engine builders or Cummins experts.

My un-expert advice...

Your new 180° T-Stat p/n 3967195 (supercedes p/n 3954194) appears to be a Pre 1994 T-Stat. It has those 2 brass "Jiggle Pins" that bleed trapped air in the cooling system. They did away with that sysytem in 1993 on the Cummins/ Dodge trucks.



Perhaps the T-Stat was "mis-boxed"? Or it could be for use in another ISB application that uses a different cooling system?



I would'nt use it. Bring it back and have the parts guy try another box.



Then again I could be wrong?



You could call Mark @ TST and ask him about your T-Stat. He shows 180° 395194 still as a good #. So does Fritz's web site.

180 t-stat

Attached is a pic of my original 180 t-stat from my 99 & the box of the replacement t-stat with the Mopar part number. As I recall my replacement looks like yours and has been working fine since Labor Day weekend. I would recheck the part number and if your told it's right or can verify with another new t-stat that is the same, give it a try. You can always remove it if necessary.
