I want to say first off that this forum is THE authority on these trucks. I have learned more in the last week reading all of your posts than I could have ever hoped to know. Thank you all for that. So for my 2nd post.....

I have come to the realization that guages must be purchased before any of the real fun BOMB stuff, but I'm still not so sure on which guages I really need. I have spent hours reading through the various opinions and facts, but I have a few questions yet. The truck is stock, and I probably won't BOMB it beyond injectors and computer box. It's already got me a speeding ticket towing my 5'er up the Grapevine here in CA, so I probably don't need too much more power (yeah, I know that what we need is not really the point. )

So, for the questions:

With the 3 week old truck that I have, is the lifter pump still a problem, or has DM finally found a remedy ? In other words, do I need a FP guage ?

What does the boost guage tell me ? Do I need it if I don't go crazy with power mods ?

The trans temp and EGT guages are obvious as to thier purpose and I see them as a must since I do tow with the truck.

I am looking to get the a-pillar 3 pod from www.dieselpowerproducts.com and I have the option to get all 4 guages in there or pick 3 of my choice, with the difference of course being the $$

thanks for any input,

Damon

I have a combo EGT/boost gauge. That works well since this engine performance info is together in one spot. Trans temp gauge and FP gauge would be the other two to make up the three for your a-pilar pod.

You definitely need fuel pressure just lost my lift pump at 42k and others have lost them even earlier than that. Boost gauge is good so you know what you have in case you have a leak in the hoses so you can diagnose a problem. Trans temp is also needed especial for towing with auto and I would also think a about a pyrometer make sure nothing is melting.

Look into the pillars I have a autometer one from genos didn't really like how it fit not really OEM quality but still works.

Good luck with the gauge's and the nice new truck!

Welcome aboard!:)

Gages, gages, gages. Lots of ideas/opinions out there, as you already know. Here are mine.

First, which gages? I used the Isspro first. I hated them. The back-light in the boost gage was very weak. The faces didn't even match. And the EGT gage failed on me very early in its life. Then I got the Autometer gages from Diesel Dynamics, and they say Diesel Dynamics on the face. Good-looking gages, and are a very close match to the original instrument cluster on the dash. I have EGT and boost gages mounted on the pillar, and I do not have the speaker up there.

Second, Do you need them? Well, even if you aren't going to BOMB much (yeah right, first of all, welcome to the board, second, you are now cursed for becoming a member. You will find your "will"power and your "desire for" power tested here:D ), gages will give you a wealth of knowledge on your truck, no matter what you are doing with it, and no matter what mods you decide to install. EGT is obvious. It tells you if you are about to melt stuff. And if you get mods, you can tell what they are doing for you, good, bad, or indifferent. The boost gage will tell you a lot, as well. Even if you do little or no mods, it can tell you what kind of performance you are getting. For instance, if you have high egt's, and low or no boost, you have an air leak in the air intake somewhere. If you have no boost, and egt's are low, and power is gone, you have a fueling problem.

I installed my gages before any mods, and my HO could easily get above 12-1300 degrees without a load! They are a great investment!!!

I don't have a fuel gage, tho it would be a good idea. Nothing wrong with more info. As far as DC fixing the lift pump problem, I'm not too sure. Even if they did, it doesn't mean there won't be any bad ones that slip by their supposed QA.

My 2 1/2 cents.

Thanks for the reponses guys. Information overload is easy to reach on this site, and I found that to be the case in reading about all of the experiences and opinions on the guages.

I'm thinking that I will go with all 4 guages, and use a combo Pyro/Boost so I can get away with only the triple a-pillar mount. And I will probably go with Di-Procol since they are very close to my house if I ever need replacement parts.

I'm sure that I will have questions when I get that big box of parts in a couple of weeks... ... ...
