Dodge tells me the number is on my plastic valve cover... a sticker. So I dig up the cover and the sticker is gone. I call them and they are stumped.

The number is not on the block.

I cannot get my new injection pump until I supply this.

I find it hard to believe they cannot pull up a factory build sheet or something like that from my VIN to get this for me.

How would I get the sticker replaced?

I called Cummins and they said they 'might' be able to get it with the pump number... I will try that tomorrow.

Is this on the 2004 3500 listed in your readers rig? If so, I think the sticker is actually on the drivers side of the engine towards the front / radiator. It's visible just when you open the hood. I've seen it there on 2004. 5's and 2005's. In both cases you don't have to "dig up the cover" on anything. You should just open the hood and see it on the drivers side towards the front of the engine.

Did you check the passenger side rear corner of the block below the head? All ISBs are SUPPOSED to be stamped there...

Are you replacing the gear pump?

I had to dig up the plastic trim cover as it is off the truck. This is where the sticker is that has the engine number on it. I have a shaker hood on it and the plastic cover came off over a year ago.

I looked on the block and told Cummins that and they said that the engine does not have the engine number on it anymore.

Its for the CP3 pump. We tested it and found it to be out of spec.

I was at 5500 psi when at WOT when it should be over 20,000.

It is my 04 in the readers rigs.

What puzzles me is Dodge saying that is the only place to get the number... I say bull... its gotta be recorded on the build or inventory somewhere for DC when they built this truck.

Sorry -- I misunderstood. :)

That is weird -- You'd think they'd track that stuff or there would be a way to find out based upon the VIN.

Say there were an engine failure under warranty on a newly delivered truck. I'd think that Cummins would require Dodge to report the engine number back to them for the purposes of tracking and possibly future TSB's or recalls. Cummins would also want to know in the event they had a production problem.

There has to be a way to find out.

Any chance you registered the engine on the Cummins website after you got your truck? As I recall you had to supply an engine number then.

Otherwise, maybe someone with an '04 around the same build date as yours could just tell you their number so you can get the part released?

Yeah what if the there was a stolen truck that was recovered and the engine was gone... all a thief has to do is remove the sticker?

Hmm... PM me your VIN and I will see if there is an cross reference on my service dealer site...

Though you pose a good question, Heck I painted my sticker on accident (though not all the way that I could not read it, luckily!)

My '03 had the sticker on the cheesy cover and I couldn't find a SN anywhere else on the engine. I think Cummins putting the ID sticker on the ugly and easily removable plastic cover wasn't one of their most brilliant moves.
