Help,

I need more air into the engine ... currently I have a AMSOil oil foam filter in the truck and it does a OK job (about 600 or slightly under doing 75 on the highway empty). But when I have to hit it to pass people it jumps to 1000 quite easly.

Towing my new Kubota BX23 with a new 9000K trailer :D :D :D

home on Friday, the EGT'S would jump to 1000 with no trouble up slight inclines. If I were just crusing on the highway with the trailer and tractor I could keep it at about 650 with just moderate throttle.

What is the best air filter system out there - AFE? I need to reduce the EGTs some more and get more air into the engine.

What do you folks think is the best air filter system around?

I've got the AFE drop-in for the stock airbox and it does ok, but you might benefit from the entire kit w/shield and conical filter or some other BHAF setup. I can hit 1000 pretty easy empty @ 20 lbs. boost with just a #10 plate slid . 050 forward of center. With as much fuel as you have the temps don't sound outrageous. How heavy does your right foot have to be to get 1200 or 1300*?

There are similar threads I searched for a few days back with which I had the same question. From what I read the Scotty II system works very well. I can't personally vouch, but if you do a search, you might find the same I read. I will be ordering one myself soon!

New tractor, lucky guy!:D

Well, empty ... if I crank it (3/4+ throttle) up a hill I can hit 1200 with no problem. I can produce a lot of smoke if I want ... especially in 5th at low RPM. Some of my friends wonder if I burn coal instead of diesel.

The old truck is getting a little weak these days, my fuel pressure is OK 26-28psi at idle and up to 38 psi at 2000 rpm.

I just would like to get more air into the truck, and it takes a bit for the turbo to spool up to help reduce the smoke. That AFE full system is quite pricy 300+ on their web site ... maybe there is someone who sells it for less, I'll have to see.

I did get one of those BHAF last year and installed it, but my EGTs were about 50-100 higher then the AMSOil filter! It was the hot summer time when I installed it though, probably would do better in the winter.

Short of puting a bug screen on the front of the 4" snorkel to the turbo inlet ... I would like to get something that gets more air into the engine.

I found that the BHAF reduced turbo lag considerably on the HX40, but still draws engine compartment air.

You might want to consider drawing air from outside the engine compatment.

The Scotty sound good, but I don't want to start cutting holes in the truck just for an air filter. Maybe widen the one that exists for the factory air box and jury rig up something else.

Would be nice to have a funtional scoop on the hood for the air box.

FATCAT,

Check out these pics in readers rigs:

It's Whitmore's truck with his "ram air" project. I've seen it in person and it does work very well. I don't think he had to drill any holes other than for mounting bolts etc. The tough part is relocating the battery and buying cable to do the job. He has a valve on it to shut it off. It also has an intake air temp gauge which he sees a big drop when he opens the valve traveling down the highway. If ya wanna go drastic, this would do the trick. Also check out this thread

FATCAT,

I have the AFE mega-cannon, and I like it. Your EGT's seem to be in check, though. That's about the same as I run when I'm towing 7000lbs, even in valet mode. It's all in the right foot. :D I just make sure to keep it under 1100*, even if I have to slow down a little.

So it looks like all these AFE and other specialty air filter systems are no better than the drop in AMSOil foam filter.

I can't find anywhere on the TDR where the CFM values for each of the different air filter systems, are reported. Maybe I'm not doing the search right, but if any one knows could they give a hint. I guess that I'm looking for the max amout of air without butchering the truck to get it.

There was some talk on the flow rates of filters some time ago. Even when manufactures did post the flow rate is was always a different standard than the competition. This meant no direct comparison.

I "JUST" installed the fleetguard BHAF #19037 on my truck (still stock, except for 3" straight) and i was running 650 on the highway at 75 (2400 rpm, approx. ) before the BHAF, but after i would hit 750 to 800 (same rpm, running around 12 - 13 boost) To lower the egt's i made a stainless steel cover to put over my turbo, to keep the hot air from the turbo off the BHAF, and now i see 575 to 600 on egt (same rpm, 10 lb. boost)

Hope this helps

That does help. I will see if I can come up with a turbo cover to help with the heat. I would like to reinstall the BHAF and try again in the next week or two.

I went to the site referenced for Whitmore's truck, and in the spec's above the pics it stated "40" for mileage. Is this to be understood as 40mpg? If so, there must be some mistake in calculations, or he should patent his finding and sell it to D/C. I think the best these trucks do on a good day is around 23-24mpg. , so 40 would be unheard of, sought after technology.

Here is a stainless shield that I installed. Good looks, good fit and a reputable source. I have a Mallory mount with the shield and it works well.

How far is your restriction guag being pulled down? I don't know if the air cleaner change will make much difference. It might be time for twins.

This past weekend I put in a new AMSOil air filter I had down in the basement (forgot I had an extra). This has helped the EGTs by about 50 ot 75 degrees. The old one was quite dirty and had been in there for over a year. My old restriction gauge is worthless ... the thing has never worked. It always shows everything is AOK. The mallory mount seems like a good Idea ... good to see they have one for the HX40. I might try this and try to reserect my old BHAF this summer.

It is referring to the trucks odometer mileage, not MPG.

Thanks for the clarification, when I saw the term "mileage" I took it as mpg. I didn't think "40" would be an odometer reading, but I guess all trucks start at "0"
