Tanny help for gasser

History Channel "Holocaust" on this week

I have a friend that cant get into Hotmail. I went to her house, and tried to fix it... I reinstalled windows... and it still get the same error. The error says that you need to enable cookies. I set her computer up the same way as mine is... and it still doesn't work. I can get into her account from my computer, but not hers. And if I try to get into any site that has a password, like AOL, Yahoo mail, and stuff like that. I'm kind of stuck, but if I can get some help on here... I would be very thankful... thanks

Using Internet Explorer? If so goto the "blue" E on the desktop. Right click it once, select "properties" from the menu. Then select the "security" tab, chances are its set on "high"... . correct? Pull the scroll bar down to "Medium". Hit apply, then ok. That should enable cookies.

Lemmie know if this works.

I did that. . i set it to low also. And it still doesnt help. I also cleared all the history files too. She went in to the custom section, and enabled everything, still didnt help, then i set thing up just like my laptop, and it doesnt work. She using internet explorier. Thanks for your help, sorry about the double post... Thanks

Well thats the only idea I had for now. Just got off work a bit ago and heading to bed. Been up a while... .....

I'll try to get back to this thread this afternoon with some other ideas.

maybe someone else will have some... ... ...

I looked and they are turned on. But the website keeps saying they are not. I tried reseting the cookies to the default. still nothing. ??

Go to the top click tools internet options then security the custom setting then scrol to cookies, you either have disable , enable or prompt, with either enable or prompt you should be good to go. Now do you use a firewall?? Make sure its not the problem... ... ... ... ... ... ... Pete

What version of IE is it... does it support 128 bit encryption?

Bring up the browser, click on Help on the toolbar, click on About Internet Explorer. . and where it says cypher strength it should say 128 bit... if not you need to get the security patch from MS... .

if it does have the 128 bit encryption already... then go to Tools on the toolbar... click on internet options... click on the advanced Tab... scroll down to secuity... make sure that PCT 1. 0,SSL 2. 0 and SSL 3. 0 are checked, if not check them and apply it.

To clarify above posts:

In MSIE choose Tools/Internet Options/Security tab/highlight "internet" icon in web content zone/select the "Custom level" button.

Under the "security settings" section, scroll down to Cookies in this list and choose to Enable them.

Say "OK" then select the "Apply" button. This should work on MSIE 5. X.

Good luck,

Pat

Save yourself the headache. Uninstall IE and reinstall with the current version. This will more than likely solve your problem.

JAnderson... I think you are right. I have done everything. . no i cant get to any site at all. and everything is back the way it was. To uninstall it, i will have to have the cd, and go to add/remove correct? The to reinstall i will have to load it from the cd right? I opened the setup. exp from the website. I dont think i saved it. ? I just want to make sure i know what im doing when i get there. . so i look like I know whats going on. Thans again for yout help

im making one more request for help. Right now the computer can dial up the net, and connect, but it would show any sites... and no icq or aol instant mess... or anything like that... Im really screwed now

Are using AOL?

What version?

What version if IE do you have and what version of Windows??

It won't show any sites now????

Time for a breather. OOOOOOOOHHHHH AAAAAAHHHHHH.

OK. To uninstall you do not need the cd. Just go to control pane, add remove programs and remove IE.

To reinstall you will need some sort of CD. HINT

A few different software CD's will have IE on them. Office 97 has IE3 on it and that will get you connected to upgrade to IE5. Just browse the cd for Value pack then you will find Internet Exporer. Your windows cd might also.

Be sure to have the software before you remove IE.

I think at this time that is the best way to do it.

Thanks... i have one more question. If i download and save the setup files to a floppy then, take it to her computer, uninstall, run the setup file to reinstall will i be ok? or do i need more than just the setup files. I think it will work this way. Im sorry im kinda out of my element with computers, but im learning. thanks for all of your help guys.

The only downfall to the setup files is that it uses the internet to install the program. if you have a slow modem or connection problems it will drive you crazy. I would suggest using the office cd or windows cd and then upgrade off the internet after that.

good luck

IE5 setup files?

It's been a while since I've done this, but if you've upgraded the computer recently, look to see if there's a directory called, 'IE5 Setup Files' or something similar. As I recall, the files are copied there and then installed. It's worth a look.

Also, if you have IE5 installed, and it's not working, you might try removing and re-installing the modem. If you remove it, the next time the computer boots, it should find 'new' hardware and either install it or ask for the disk. If you re-install the modem, Dial-Up Networking will likely need to be told which modem to use, as removing the modem confuses it.

If she's an AOLuser, never mind about the above paragraph. You either have to be an expert or use AOL software all the way. Mixing and matching with AOL and the real world doesn't work well. If that's the case, you might be better off installing the AOL software over again.

There are some programs that disable cookies, as I recall. You might want to look in the System Tray and make sure you understand all the programs that are sitting in there.

If there are 'extra' programs running, try to disable 'em. Whenever something isn't working, I always try to reduce things to simplest terms, and go from there. It's a lot easier to get something working, and break it by adding programs, then it is to take something complicated that isn't working, and try to fix it.

Joesoot asked some good questions. Answering them will help people come up with more specific ideas.

One thing I'm not clear on: Before you started, was she able to access AOL, Yahoo, and stuff like that? Hotmail was the only problem?

If you think THIS is fun, you should try Internet Connection Sharing!

Jim

She doesnt have aol installed only Instant Messenger. She couldnt get to any sites that were password protected. but she could get to other web sites. I think if i try the above solutions i will fix the problem. And if not i guess its time to pay someone. I have lots to try... thanks all. Ill let you know tomorrow. Im going to try my luck with her crazy computer again.

This is gonna make my fingers tired

Edit:What version of windows is it?

What version of IE is it?

What error message do you get if any?(verbatim is important)

Does the browser support 128 bit encryption? If you don't know, bring the browser up on the screen> click on "help" then click on "about internet explorer"... this will tell you what version of IE it is and also, next to where it says cypher strength, what does it say? 128 bit? 0 bit? 64 bit??????

I'd throw in screenshots, but I forgot how.

Anyway, did you check to see if security encrytion programs were enable... as I posted above... ? If these encryption programs are disabled, getting to a secure site will be impossible... I'll post instructions again:

Open the browser up> up @ the top of the screen between "favorites" and "help", click on "tools"> on the drop down menu click on "Internet Options">on the top are 6 Tabs> click on the Tab on the far right that says "Advanced"> after that, scroll the bar down all the way to the bottom, Now under "security" , make sure "PCT 1. 0", "SSL 2. 0" and "SSL 3. 0" have checkmarks in the boxes next to them... if they don't , they need to be checked... then click on "Apply". . if that doesn't fix it...

Adendum: sometimes PCT 1. 0 or TLS 1. 0 can actually cause the problem... meaning, some sites don't support this form of encryption and it can interfere... if that is the case these need to be disabled ... follow the steps above and make the appropriate changes.

Try the Internet Explorer Repair tool... this is how:

Step 1:Make sure you're at the desktop, click on the windows "Start" button> slide your mouse up to settings>Step 2:Left click on "control panel">Step 3: then double click on the "add/remove programs" icon>Step 4:now below in the white window is a listing of programs, in the listing of programs scroll down until you see "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools"... once you find it, left click on it to highlight it>Step 6: then click on the "add/remove" button below... you should receive a pop up window with 3 choices, Step 7: select "repair internet explorer" and click ok... . it will go thru the repair process then reboot... . see if that worked??????

If that didn't work go thru those steps all the way to Step 7, but instead of selecting "repair internet explorer", select "restore the previous windows configuration" this will bring Internet Explorer back to an earlier version installed on the 'puter and should nullify any changes that might have been made to cause this problem... if it works and she wants a newer back, it is downloadable.

Hope this helps.

If none of these steps help try this site:
