1) Did any of the 2006 engines have an EGR valve?
2) Does the engine for the manual have a lower HP & TQ rating?
3) Is it possible that several hundred 2006 5. 9L trucks were assembled in Detroit?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm a fulltime RVer, I just arrived in Las Vegas to find my refrigerator is broken, and I potentially have a unique opportunity to buy the truck that belongs to the Mobile RV Service guy who just stopped by to measure my refrigerator and go check options for getting a new one. I mentioned that I only want a basic replacement because I plan on getting a new 5er soon anyway, but first I need to find a nice truck like he's got, and that led to his potentially being for sale, as he likes to get a new one every several years anyway!
When he called back to say that Mon was as soon as he could see about replacement refrigerators, I learned that his truck is a 2006 DRW Manual, 29K miles, no EGR valve, and that when he went to the dealer to order seat covers the parts person ran his VIN, and said he had a very special truck that was one of several hundred which were assembled in Detroit?
I'm debating between his truck or some similar 5. 9L vs waiting a little longer to see how well the 6. 7L problems get sorted out. For the past 9 years I've been fulltime RVing with an early 99 SRW F350 7. 3L plus many mods pulling a 13. 5K 5er, and I need to find a more capable DRW truck so I can get a little larger trailer.
I've read a lot of good things about the new 6 speed auto with exhaust brake, but also about issues with the DPF, EGR valve, and other 2007. 5 emissions issues as well. I've also read about even better 6. 7L versions coming out in 2009? Maybe I should wait for a 4500 with a pickup body? I can wait another year or two, but at age 65 and counting, my waiting time might be limited by factors other than how well my 7. 3L is currently running?
I realize if I go the 5. 9L route, I'll have to do some engine and transmission mods and add an exhaust brake to get it to do what I expect and need, but if I wait and go with the new 6. 7L, I'm concerned about getting a CEL light in the middle of nowhere. I don't spend that much time in or near larger cities with easy access to service.
If there're any TDR members in Las Vegas who want to stop by for a beer and give me a quick education on the Cummins and Dodge trucks, I'll be in site #422 at the Circus Circus KOA for the next 6 weeks.
