i just bought a new fuel tank sending unitfor my 01. any tips for doin this? any dos an donts?thanks for help in advance.

Some folks like to remove the bed for access. Since I have 5th wheel rails this gets more complicated so I just lowered the tank.

I had the tank nearly empy, placed a floor jack at the rear end of the tank and made a rope sling to support and lower the front.

You need to remove the filler hose and two quick release fittings for the fuel supply and return lines. I found it easiest to remove the two belly bands and lower the tank a few inches to gain access to the quick release fittings.

The job took me about four hours, but I'am sure I could do it in half the time now that I've done it.

Being too old to feel comfortable doing it all by myself, the local shop put mine in for me, $75 labor.

Draw straw

While you have the tank down it would be a good time to install a better flowing draw straw. Lots of vendors have them and you can do a search for them with lots of answers. Ponz

Dino. .

With as high as your truck sits it may be a PIA to drop the tank unless its about empty. It may be easier if you have a place you can loosen and remove the bed and work from the top.

If you do decide to remove the tank, make sure its about empty and spray the strap bolts the night before with a loosening agent to help get them off. Do not forget to disconnect the fuel lines and electric wires before bringing the tank all the way out... . Andy

If memory serves (which it frequently doesn't these days), I had to sit myself up between the fender and the frame, reach in between the bed and frame and remove the fuel supply and return lines before dropping the tank. Then I loosened both bands a little, then undid the front, then the back. I think I dropped it onto a creeper so I could roll it out.

If/when I do it again, I'll replace the stock pickup with a Draw Straw.

With a 1/4 tank, it wasn't too tough, even for an old guy.

Access plate

When it comes time to do mine, I plan on cutting the bed above the tank, then tack it back in place. A little bed liner spray - who would ever know? ;)

'course, I have a metal fab shop!

Anybody have measurements or a pic of where to cut? I don't mind cutting and welding either. Sure sounds a lot easier than unloading my bed to lift it or dropping my tank.

well i did the job today. not too bad. it was 93 degrees here today so that made it a little harder, but its in an it works!!!!!!! thanks for the help guys!:)

Sick boy, which route did you pick? Bed removal or from underneath? Any additional tips? I am facing the same problem with a malfunctioning sending unit. Thanks.

i dropped the tank. i used some blocks of wood an jack stands so i could take off the straps that hold the tank up. then u can get to the hoses to unhook them . take tank out an pop in your new unit. wasnt to bad to do.
