BOTH of the little factory vents, which were supposed to be plugged, were open. I just ran a 1/4 inch fuel line hose between the two of them and secured them with screw-type hose clamps.
Not a good idea, as you use fuel the tank will go into a vacuum because the cap is not vented. Those vents need to be able to take in air to displace the fuel used.

Matt400: Initially, I though that too. However, wouldn't the vent I'm installing with the kit take care of the in-use venting requirement?

Does anybody disagree with my logic?

Steve

No, because that vent is only open when the fuel cap is off while refueling. You could do what you did if you can find a vented fuel cap but I don't think any are made with late model threads.

The vents on the tank also function as roll over valves so fuel is contained if the truck rolls and at the same time they allow air into the tank as fuel is used. I put a filter on each one and extended it with a hose.

Tee- these smallvents don't work like teh vent mod because thet are of such small size. Maybe 1/4" in diameter at most, and they are lower than the new bulkhead fitting as well.

This explains why we are actually able to fill the tank to the very top without the vent kit even though it takes a very long time.

They are a one way valve. . air in, and no liquid out.

Everything Matt400 has said is 100% correct. When I put my vent kit in, I also ran 1/4" fuel lines from the rollover valves (small vents) to a tee, and then a cheap VW fuel filter. I ty-wrapped the filter to the frame.

I always fill-up to the brim and my truck has never leaked a drop of fuel.

To be honest, if I'd been thinking it would have been cheaper to buy 2 filters, less hose, and no tee. Live and learn.

I have filled my tank 19 times since buying the truck. Every time I have taken the time to fill it to the very top of the filler neck. At this point (7693 miles) it is getting 16. 61 mpg. The last two times were at the same station, same pump, same time of day same exact mpg. 10/3 I put in 35. 166 gallons for 584. 2 miles driven. 10/17 I put in 36. 801 gallons for 611. 3 miles driven. I believe from now on I will fill up around 550 miles to prevent running out. I put the pump on slow fill and it seems not to foam as much. I can put around 4. 3 gallons in after the pump clicks off. I have several friends that swear by the vent mod, they seem to think it fills quicker with it installed. I'll have to put it on my wish list of things to do. Thanks

Today, I put 38. 64 gallons in my tank after finishing the mod. Man, the tank filled very quickly right up into the neck of tank. That's the good news. The bad news is it cost me $119. 75 in fuel!
