I got in a bind the other day, and I think I almost ran out of diesel.

I was on the interstate with about 45 miles to go...

I just found my "sweet spot" (about 64 mph) for the flats, kind of let off on the throttle going up hill and gently accelerated down hill. And made it!

I'm sure there is no reserve beyond the 35 gallons, right?

Have any of you put in more that 35 gallons?

Chris

I sure thought I was going to run out once on a trip from to Tx to Fl. I was in southern La on I-10 when low fuel alarm went off. Couldn't find diesel at any station that I could get into and out of with fiver behind me. Got off I-10 and started looking on Hwy. 90. Fuel gauge was dead on empty. Finally found a station and filled up. Only held 30 gallons. Heck, I had enough to go on to Ms where fuel was cheaper. You must have been below empty on your gauge.

One time I found myself 30 miles from a station and right on empty made it no problems and put in just under 30 gallons. In fact I have never put in more than 30.

A couple of weeks ago I put almost the same amount, 34. 5 gallons in my truck. I had to look underneath to make sure it was'nt leaking on the ground. The gauge was below E I think.

When I had to drain my tank due to a bad load of fuel it took about 37 gallons - that was to fill it to the very top of the filler neck, I understand there's normally about a gallon that goes in the fill neck and that air space is there to have some crush space in an accident. I filled it all the way to make sure the biocide reached everything.

When I replaced my fuel guage sending unit, I adjusted the float arm so it lays near the bottom of the tank on "E". Onetime I got caught short, and limped into the QuikTrip pegged on "E". I filled up to the filler cap, and squeezed in 35. 8 It was still running smooth when I got there, couldn't have had much left. Never ran out yet in 150,000 miles.

I just recently came back from Fla. On the way down the fuel low light came on. Never saw that before and the book indicates 4 gal remaining. So I stopped soon after and only pumped 29. 5 gal. On the ay back I drove till the light came on and after about 25 miles the gauge was very low so I stopped again. Again I only pumped 30. 5. I know that the light is not accurate and I don't know close to the bottom of the tank the pickup line is. So I'm not sure how much useable fuel I had left. It wonders me.

:--) Man, some of you guys like to live on the edge. Especially some of you 24 valvers!:--) I figure with a 600-800 mile range, there's no sense to go below a 1/4 tank.

I always fuel up right on the red line. Most I've ever put in was 34. 6, that's kinda close though  I usually check the trip odometer when the fuel light comes on - judge by that and the needle. I learned a great deal on the trip to Yellowstone this past summer, like if you fuel up as soon as the fuel light comes on it's a waste of time as it only takes about 28 - 29 gallons.

All fuel gauges and senders are different so you kinda haveta learn what works best for you and what you feel comfortable with.

MHO;)

If I tried to make it 600 to 800 miles on one tank, I would be stuck on the side of the road at around 476 miles. That is assuming I filled it all the way up. You guys have it good, with the good mileage. I usually fill up at around 350-400 miles, and it usually takes around 25 gallons. That is when my gauge says empty. The most I have ever put in is about 27 gallons after running on empty for about 60 miles. This thing's mileage just sucks with all these short trips and 18 degree days. :{

I found out the morning after Superbowl Sunday that my tank holds 35. 3 gal. I have stopped 3 times to get fuel when the low fuel light hits and filled up with 28 gallons each time, 7 gallons remaining. So I figure with a worse case of 15 mpg, I need fuel within the next 100 miles.

That Sunday I had done a road trip, made note of mileage when low fuel dinged. Went to a Super bowl gathering and knew I would be pushing it to get home, but did not want to stop that night. At 104 miles past the ding, the truck did not start the next morning, I think it actually lost prime sitting on the slope of the driveway.

I knew it when it did not fire in the first rev. of the motor and did not try any further. I was relieved. I had finally pushed the calculations envelope and broke it. 2 gallons of diesel, 8 bump starts on the starter to prime the lines, then tried starting. Nothing at first, but it finally spit and sputtered to life. Nothing worse than doing a fuel filter change.

35 gal's

My fuel guage gose a quarter mark below "E" Which I found out near the grand canyon and kept running! but another time same quarter below empty but pointing down hill and it died in gear and it was prime lift pump and bleed injectors to start her again. with filler tube about 37 gal's.

Hey CAnderson, my truck must have been built right behind yours on the assembly line because I have the same truck as you minus the trans and injector upgrades and my mileage sucks too. Maybe we have a piston missing or something?? you know,

assembly guy, all hungover... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... :-laf :-laf

Yes, I have to admit that I have filled 35. 5 gals back into the tank on three different occasions. Kinda scarry... whatever fuel was in there was just the stuff circulating in the lines! I know that's not good for my fragile 24v fuel system. I always fill up to the overflow tube in the filler neck.

Theres no way in the world that I could run 600 to 800 miles. Of course I was pulling a mc trailer, but I only got 13. 8 mpg. I was not sure how many gallons of fuel I had when my dinger went off. Although I only put 29 in it and it should hold 35 I didn't know how many are useable. If I counted on 6 gallons and the pickup was too far off the bottom of the tank, I might only have 4 gallons remaining when the dinger goes off. :D

If I wanted to push it, I could get 800 miles out of a tank. Granted, those are empty highway miles. I still average 17 on #2 pulling my car trailer, 13k GCW.

Beware of bad pumps

My buddy filled up (tried to anyway)his Dura#$%! and the pump was working very slowly. My buddy also works for a company that installs and maintains fuel station pumps and he says this next thing can happen.

After 6 gallons of pumping slow, the attendant came out and said he was pumping "air". The veins in the pump were "cavitating". He checked the gage and sure enough no movement. Attendant reset the pump and it worked fine after that. This really scares me sometimes. How much are we really putting in if these things can pump air and register 6 gallons?!

I've read other posts regarding fuel mileage. Most have said to refuel right at 500 miles and I probably won't have anything to worry about. Very good advice - the most I've pumped into mine has been close to 31. 5. Don't want to have to worry about trying to get it re-started after running out. And don't want to be embarrassed trying to get it re-started when there's a 'stroke or 'max sitting near there, either.
