I would like to buy a box, only for possible mpg gain, for my 99. I see a few listed in the TDR classifieds, and on Ebay. So I would like opinions from those of you that are in the know. What do I need to be aware of when buying used? Which box (chip) usually might a guy get an economy boost from? Superchip, Edge ,Quadzilla, etc. etc. With todays fuel prices, even a 1. 5 to 2 mpg is worth pursuing, in my book. I thank you for any replies :)

I've got a buddy with the Edge chip, and he loves it. I'm thinking that in the spring, I will save up and put a Edge in. I've heard that the Predator and the Quadzilla chips don't really offer that much in gains. If you can afford it, TST is probably one of the premier chips to get, plus they are upgradeable down the road. Take this with a small grain of salt as I don't currently run one, this is all WOM from a very highly trusted friend, who is also a member here on TDR.

If you want to save fuel money, slowdown. I box is marginal at best at improving mileage. SNOKING

I already drive as if I had to pay for the maintenence (which I do) :) And I have settled in to driving 65 mph. , pretty much wherever I go. Even on interstate. So, maybe the boxes would not do anything to a mild driven vehicle anyway.

I would go with the van Aaken V5 module. It gives great low end power and we usually see a pretty good mileage gain from them. The Edge is also a very good box put I wouldn't spend the extra money.

Spend the extra and get the Edge Comp. It is fully adjustable, lets you smoke the little ric rockets or pull your foot out and get another 3 or sometimes 4 (pulling 7K) mpgs. A little pricey but they are a kick. Then once you have that, you can do a turbo, an intake, an exhaust, injectors, . . . . and. . . . The slippery power slope takes another unsuspecting Cummins owner!!

I started doing mods to my 2000 with milage in mind, and I doubt I even got . 5 mpg out of my box. Note that while I got the Edge comp, I mostly drive it on 1x1. By far, the best milage increase was from my injectors.

I bought a used Van Aaken and it worked perfectly. My mileage came up a litttle, but not much, if you drive with a light foot.

To get better MPG, try getting some better injectors, like a Mach 1. 6 injector, a Boost Fooler "chip", and a 180* t-stat.

The injectors will atomize the fuel more efficiently, the boost fooler will allow you to run more boost when you need to keep the EGT's down when towing, and the 180* t-stat will force the ECM to advance the timing giving better throttle response, and better MPG.

Hope this helps,

Merrick

Merrick, I have an extra set of stock injectors for this rig. Is there anyplace that a person can send them for modification? Or does a person just have to buy different injectors? Is there a cost savings in either method? Thanx

Look up an F1 Diesel Dealer, they can, but it's not any cheaper.

A Mach injector will perform much better than a stock modified one. The Mach injectors have more modified than just the tips.

They are worth the $.

Best bang for your buck. 275 RV injectors

I would have to agree for mileage and a mild power upgrade.

Next, you might want to try a DD TTPM (reprogrammed Edge EZ). A little more power and very little added smoke.

Well, I have a VanAaken box on the way. Next will be injectors, then guages. Maybe I am putting the cart before the horse, but oh well. Please help me I'm sliden!!!

It's already too late, but don't kid yourself into thinking that performance parts are for saving money with MPG gain. You can increase your MPG for free , compared to spending a bunch of money now on parts that might increase your MPG and save you a little money in the long run. The return on investment in fuel savings is hard to justify.

Power adding parts are for FUN. So go buy some performance upgrades and enjoy the ride :D I'd rather spend more money on a fun ride than less money on a not-fun ride. That I can justify ;)

We will have a new offering out pretty quick (Christmas) that will gain near 300 ft lbs! It will be more cost effective than anything on the market.

With "boxes" they always advertise that you get mileage increases!

Truth is, if you drive at the same speed you did before the box, then yes, you will get better mileage.

Problem is, I can't seem to keep my foot out of it now since I got my box! Tons of fun, but worse mileage now. :(

It's all about driving habits
