Yesterday while making a high speed run (100+) down a country road, I set a code and now the check engine light is on.

The truck seems to run just fine, all the gauges (Boost, EGT, Trans Temp, engine temp, oil presure, amps and fuel Pressure) are reading normal and I can't tell what happened?

Any Ideas?

and how do I clear the code?

Thanks

all you have to do is disconnect both neg terminals of the batteries for about 5 minutes, then connect and it should be cleared... works for me

What code? Cycle the key three times (Last cycle leaving the key in the on position) and write down the code # that displays in the odometer window.

I really hope someone can tell us what these codes mean. . My truck has really been acting up , and the check engine light is on. . So I checked them and I have five code numbers. .

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

0237 - map sensor voltage low

0500 - no speed sensor signal

1692 - companion code set

1693 - same pretty much

Don't worry about the 16 ones, they are like notices that another code was set somewhere.

raatler - sorry, I didn't see yours at first. That 0216 is pretty bad news usually. It means "fuel injection pump timing failure" and almost always means a new VP44

Thank you for the help , I thought that one of them might be telling me that my injector pump was shot. . Where can I find the meanings to all the codes ??? it would be nice to print them off and keep them in the truck. .

Thanks again ,

Casey

They're in chapter 25 of the service manual for one, I have a code reader/resetter that included lists for all of the major makers, they're prolly on the net but I didn't find them right off in the most likely place: dodgeram.org although they may be in there somewhere.

We also have a complete list of codes in the 24v FAQ topic at the top of both of the Turbo Diesel Topics, 2nd Generation (1994 - 2002) menus, and the 911 section.

Ut Oh a 216

P0216 (M) Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible

wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway.

I guess a 0216 is bad???

Could it be the lift pump wasn't suppling enough fuel?

Or is this something the dealer needs to look at?

What was your fuel pressure before you got the code? What is your normal operating pressures? Depending on how many miles your truck has, (and assuming that you do not run a fueling box) the VP44 should be covered under the warranty. I think for the 02 trucks you got a 7year/70k mile warranty - maybe someone could clearify that...

The lift pump has been blamed for most of the failures of the VP44.

My 98. 5 set the P0216 code approximately 18 months ago. The diesel shop tried to tell me to go ahead and replace it, "it is shot, you will probably be lucky to make it home". I have been driving it for 18 months with no signs of problems, hard starts, loss of power, or anything else. I just keep a close eye on my fuel pressure at ALL times. Just my $. 02

Some Vp44's last a long time after setting the 0216 code. Some last 5 more minutes. Some are DOA. However none the less you can attack this at a few different angles.

1 Warrantee (If that is an option and you have a STOCK vehicle) 2 start looking at VP44's from either Cummins , or other vendors but most allways never the dealer as I have seen them try and sell them for 4300 dollars when they can be had for 900-1300 dollars, and do the swap yourself.

rholcom2, said it and I have seen a truck go for over three years on a "Coded" pump. All I can say is drive it ... but with your ear to the ground. if it isn't showing hard starts , stumbles , rough idle than I would just go with it. But if you are under warrantee have them look at it. It's kinda like a tripple sided coin LOL.

Thanks for the advice

Thanks guys for the advice... ... The engine is stock so it should be covered under warranty.

The fuel pressures have been 15 PSI at idle, 11 - 12 at 65 MPH and around 8 - 9 at Wide open.

One time last year, I did see the pressure drop to around 3 PSI while cruising at 65. I thought I lost the lift pump but when I stopped the truck and fired her back up, the pressure came back up to normal and hasn't faultered since.

This is weird because the truck is running great, starts right up and has plenty of power with no "stumbles" other than the one quick hick up that set the code.

Guess my next move is to call the dealer and see what they say.

As for the injection pump. The VP44 is a Bosh unit. It CAN be had for waaay less than what the dealer charges for them as I said before. There is the reman option that can get you a pump for 900. 00 . Scince the yer 1999 there has been something like 5 revisions of the pump and any VP that you can obtain now should be of the latest revision and are a much stronger pump than those of the past. A simple search on the TDR will bring up a lot of Vp44 inquiries however if you search for " Find VP44 " you will find members that have purchased them at their respectfull prices.

:EDIT:

My bad I didn't see Lift pump in your Q:. As for them you will find A BILLION answers to that one. Me I have a PE4200 with -8An lines that have performed great for the past 2 years. There is the FASS ,Preperator , Pusher , Carter , Holly , And aeromotive setups. Again search for any of those terms and you should have every answer upside down , sideways , and any other which way you would like to read them
