Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) I smoke too much

Or should I say my truck does. I think she's up to three packs a day. Accelerating from a stop or after a slow turn and accelerate she puts out a pretty good stream of smoke. Tried different throttle techniques and box on or off makes no difference. This started about 2 months ago. before then I was able to take off cleanly and smoke when I wanted. Nothing has been changed on the truck this year. Any ideas or will I have to start buying Nicorette for her.

You have a boost leak...



Check the intercooler boot on the drivers side where it connects to the intercooler. A lot of 01's are hitting the fender and slicing the boot.

In addition to what Torque this said, temperature and humidity play affect the smoke big time. Its been hot /humid here lately and all trucks smoke real bad,even stocker s will puff some smoke. cold/dry weather hardly any smoke

Yes, smoke does = but recently I got this look from the local sheriff. Even though I don't think it smokes anymore than the school busses.



I've checked the lower elbow and it is close to the fender but no marks on it. Tightened all the clamps and looked for cracks. May have to do a pressure test if I can get the time to make the setup.



Would a small boost leak lower the max boost very much. It still builds to 40 like always. Now if only I could put that smoke to good use so as to be able to post in the Great Smoke Stories thread.

Boost Leaks are smokers!!! I remember blowing the intercooler line @ the strip and drove home w/ no boost, smoked like a forest fire does!

If no hoses are leaking, do yourself a favor and get the copper intake gaskets. The intake plate that bolts to the head has quite a few places that leak, especially around the intake horn.

I read a response on another thread that some of the Pullers use ether to spray around the boots and such to check for leaks. Not sure if I want to try that but was wondering if spraying washer fluid - water meth - do close to the same thing. I will check the gaskets on the intake and air horn next.

Your quick and direct answer tells me that you have dealt with this. I just found this thread and I have the exact same problem. I checked my intercooler boot and it is soft, oily and squashy and no doubt needs replacing. Please advise on what the best fix has been. Any replacement hoses better than OEM? What can be done to avoid recurrances?

The whole set is a little too pricey for me right now.

Haven't had much time to test for leaks but I did set my box to 1x1 the other day and got very little smoke. Also went to 1x5 and very little smoke. Normally run 1x3. A couple of times earlier this year the box would not turn off or change settings no matter how many times I pushed the buttons. Called Edge and they said they would replace it but never got around to it because the problem hasn't happened again.

You MUST have a real good ground on the comp. I grounded mine to the battery screw.
