I Solved The "Oil Wars"

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Manual transmission temp gauge???

We be breathin' clean Scotty II air ... quietly

I've been searching the forums for months, trying to find the ultimate answer to the "oil wars" (i. e. "... I use (fill in the blank) because (fill in the blank) and you should too. "

I'm at the point where I need to change out my lubricants, so here is what I came up with:

Differentials: Royal Purple Synthetic

Gear Box: Redline MT90

Engine: Delo 400 (actually I've been using this since the truck was new)

Transfer Case: Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF

Here's my reasoning:

Royal Purple: Just sounds like a neat product (I wonder if it really is purple)... ;)

Redline MT90: My personal protest against $24 a quart Syntorque Synthetic...

Delo 400: If it was good enough for the dinosaurs, it's good enough for me...

Amsoil ATF: Decided to get some Amsoil product just to make all the Amsoil dealers in the TDR happy... :D

Okay... I've solved the "oil wars" on the forum... . Now, just leave me alone and let me get all this stuff in my truck... :)

Why didnt I think of that ... ... ... ... ... ... you are a genious!

All good products, as long as you have good access to them when needed... ... ... ... ... . no problem

RJOL,

Do you have the NV 4500? If you do and you do not use the Syntorque Syn oil I guarantee that you will ending up trashing your syncros. Unless of course it has the exact composition as the Syntorque. As of this minute I am reaping the outcome of the previous owner being to cheap to use the Syntorque. :{ Even after I asked him if he ever changed the transmission oil to something other to which he replied "nope". That oil is made specifically for that transmission and is required for proper life of the syncros. Just my 2 cents worth to hopefully keep someone from doing what I am.

I put Redline MT90 in my NV4500 a few years ago. Didn't like the way it shifted. Almost like there was a delay. Much worse when it got cold out.

Genius I don't think that word fits you Whitmore. It's your truck so use what you want to. As Mr. Whitmore says all good products. Maybe he really is a genius:D

guys to me it looks like if you use the fs2500 by pass filter is doesnt matter what you run your crankcase. i just watched a head to head comparison to fleetgaurds and amsoil. :--) is all i can say this is the best in the world and even at 400 i am getting one;)

If you're getting Royal Purple ,put it in the NV4500 too. Their 75w90 is rated API GL-4 +GL-5 . Perfect for your personal protest against the 24$/qt stuff. Non-corrosive for your syncros too. Thats what RP and the API say anyway:-{}

Would API approve of your mixed mode of operation?:-laf

You can't solve the OIL/transmission/whatever wars because my oil/transmission/whatever is the slickest/fastest/smoothest if you change it more/less/as often and use bypass/single/double filters with analysis/eyeballing it/smelling the stuff. At least the dealer/shadetree won't be able to void my warrantee/guarantee/hocky stick when I need a free/discount/value added replacement/service/adjustment and I'll make more power/be faster/live longer with only grapfruit juice and crackers IF I sleep in a hammock without mosquito netting.

comprende amigo?Oo. :-{} :{  :D

Wade, I read your response 3 times - Laughed my ars off every time!:-laf

By the way, thats the first time I ever got dizzy reading a post! ;)

Oh well... can't make everyone happy

Well... here's what Redline said when I emailed them with your thoughts on this subject...

"... MT-90 is compatible with the NV4500 transmission, it will not harm the synchros. The MT-90 is slightly higher viscosity than the spec a 75W85, so might be a little stiffer shifting when cold. I recommend a blend of 2 quarts MTL and 2 quarts MT-90 to more closely match the spec's viscosity"...

Red Line Oil

... Have fun... ;)

Unless it has the exact same composition as the Syntorque.

RJOL,

I did qualify that in my previous statement with the quote above. But it is nice to know that there is another brand that is compatible with our syncros. How much is it a quart. I get the syntorque for about 12 and change per quart.

$7. 95 a quart plus a few dollars for shipping. The best deal I saw on Syntorqe was through Standard Transmisison. The total there was close to $60 for a gallon, with shipping... .

Castrol Syntrans 75W-85 API GL-4

I've been running searches and looking at everbody's OPINION on the oil war's, especially the oils used in the NV4500. I did buy some synthetic from my local GM dealer for around $15 once but decided it was TOO EXPENSIVE when it came time to install my Fastcoolers. So I started looking/searching any and all places I could get an oil that will meet our specs(fully synthetic;GL-4;75W-85). I called a Castrol industrial dealer about the product called SYNTORQ and he said he would search his product line and call back. Well he did and he said he found the product but under a different name; SYNTRANS! I asked him about it and he said he could get it for me in 6 gallon pails. The cost will break down to around $6. 50 to $7. 00 per QUART He is going to order it for me as it is a non-stocked item, it has to come from Germany. He said it has been ordered before for Mercedes dealers. I think this is SYNTORQ under a different name and PRICE.
