This looks like it could be a boatload of fun!



With a decent 'chute and one of those glider suits, I'd be happy to jump out of an airplane at 25,000 feet and glide back to earth, steering all the way. I might need O2 down to 15K feet or so (I'm good for 6 hours or so at 14,400 feet w/o O2), but it would be quite the exercise, and not nearly as dull as sitting under a canopy waiting for the ground to arise.

Hmmm. 15000 feet is 2. 84 miles. At a maximum of 100 MPH, it would take 1. 7 minutes to reach the ground. If the rate of descent is more like that of the old round parachutes (around 20 MPH), it should take about 8. 5 minutes to reach the ground. Since the video seemed to show a much slower descent, it could take a half hour or so to land (if your arms and legs hold up).



Interference from other air traffic? Depends on where you are. If you jump off the bridge over US89 (east of the Grand Canyon), air traffic is not likely a problem. If you jumped off the Empire State Building, air traffic wouldn't be a problem, unless there are choppers surveying the city or you happened to jump on 11 September 2001. And I would expect most places that have fairly regular parachuting (from small aircraft) would be safe from most air traffic. As I recall, jets are usually at 10K feet PDQ (within a few miles of the airport); recreational jumping takes place a fair distance from commercial airports.

fest3er, this is a little of what I was wondering about. I was not refering to the video or base jumping. Just a couple of questions of jumping out of a plane at high altitude. Sounds like you may have done it a time or two.



And I have never jumped out of a plane that was off the ground.



Well, I did jump out of a quarter ride in front of the grocery store once that was jet. That count? :-laf

Or how about Joseph Kittinger in 1960. Flew up to 102,000 feet in a balloon. When he decided to leave he just stepped off the edge and he opened his main chute at 17,500 feet. Thats a free fall of about 16 miles
