Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) i think i broke the motor good this time.

on my way home box on 2x1 i stepped on it a little maybe 1/4 - 1/2 and BANG it make lots of noise so i shut it down and called a tow truck and had it towed to the shop, if i bump the starter i can hear something banging around, i guess i'll start by checking the Flex plate and then pull the head and if still nothing the i guess i'll pull the motor.



for a few weeks now when i shut it down i could hear a noise just as the motor stoped, sounded like something in the oil pan (a nocking noise) or i guess it also could have been the Flex plate (bolts coming lose) sounded like a hollow metal to metal sound.



also when i stepped on it hard i could hear a rattling sound coming for the motor, before it went bang.



i guess i'll find out when i start tearing into it this week

well it is a flex plate, we are starting to tear into it now.



can i pull the trans with the OD unit and the transfer case all in one unit??

I'd pull the T-case. It's just easier to deal with. Although..... If your just doing the flex plate... .



You could leave the T-case in there, pull the T-case mount out... and just slide it all back. The T-case will act as a counter balance and hold the bell housing against the floor while you pull the flex plate. I've been told doing it that way, you have abotu 6'' to get in there and replace it.

Josh is right. I would try to just pull it back. but if you are going to pull it out, I would remove the transfer case. you dont need to mess with the o/d unit.

p. s. not to hear of your misfortune, but I am glad I dropped the money and got a billet flexplate when I ordered my stuff. makes me feel a little better about dropping the money.

well it's all out and yeah it broke it but good!!

it ripped out the center all the way around,... . i think it's time for one that won't break LOL



talked to DTT and i may order one from them. do it once and forget about it.



this year has been a bad year for the truck breaking, first the head gasket and now this, i guess I am glad it all happened with in 10 miles from home.



the wife is glad it didn't cost to much :-laf

once you get up in power it can be a commom problem, i'll have to take a pic of it and show you the shape the flex plate is in. it's not a pretty sight.

Stephan at DTT recommended a billet flex plate when I bought my parts. I guess I should be glad I bought it. cant wait for the rest of my parts to arrive.
