if anyone remembers of my weird transmission problems... well, i think i found out the problem. i did clip off almost a half inch on the dipstick so it goes in. now, the motor has been pulling down on me (just did it 4 times in a 45minute drive around  ). let off the throttle, put my foot back into it and all is well. well, i got home and check the fluid. lo and behold--i found bubbles this time! the fluid is about a 1/2 inch over the top of the fill mark (how many quarts overfilled?). so, i guess i'll be dropping the pan this weekend (hopefully) at my dad's shop. should i use rtv sealant when i put the pan back on?

btw, i've put 18. 5k miles on the truck since nov 30 and i've been having problems since i got it (now getting worse). the fluid isn't burnt, but i fear i'm going to crap out this transmission. :(

Overfilling won't foam the whole works, the pick up will still be in liquid. The biggest detriment to overfilling is seepage out of the vent which is above the input shaft seal. FWIW, I run mine a little overfilled to reduce the TC drainback. I have a little seepage but everything else works great.

Don't use RTV, the gasket in the NAPA kit works good. Avoid the cork/rubber junk.

Call Dave Goerend, link in my truck profile.

great thanks. i've heard that way overfilling it will cause all sorts of problems. i knew i'd probably have to call a transmission specialist. it did a good slip a couple hours ago (then caught).

btw, you raced with the sno pro? my dad is getting the sno pro Team Arctic edition firecat in... . can't wait to try it out!!

I don't think this is your problem. I clipped mine off and my fluid is 1/2 inch above and I have alway had some bubbles. My transmission is stock with one fluid change at 30K miles with plain old mopar fluid and a new filter. I now have 50K miles on my truck and the transmission has alway worked perfectly. I had a transmission consultant tell me that the only negative effect, you will have from over filling the transmission is fluid coming out your dip stick. He said it will not hurt the transmission. I hope you find out what is causing your problem. I hope this information is helpful.

Hey Rammer, please explain what you mean by pulling the engine down.

I am not aware of a transmission problem that would do that. or should i say, be able to do that :D

talk to us about your problem and lets see what we can do!

Todd

well, while i'm here, i'll reply tonight when i get down to my dad's house more thouroughly. (gonna go apply to cummins northeast, a lot shot--but maybe i could get some small job sweeping floors and get my feet wet b4 college:D ). basically, the motor will climb in rpms, but slowly--almost like it's starving for air. <--slid the plate backwards and it's similar to that. i let off, then get back into the throttle and it takes off like normal. i've also had the slipping problem in 1st gear since i got this truck (bands?) to where it'll slip, then catch. well, i'll raply later on. gotta go!

OK tell us at what speed this happens. what gear or gears and try to describe better what will happen from start to finish.

lets see if we can get this diagnosed or even better, fixed :D

Good luck, that sounds like a cool summer job.

Yup, have the scars to prove it! You Dad's Firecat ought to be awesome. I'm signed up to get a 700 and another 440 this year. Think snow!!!

think snow? oh man, it was 55* snowmobiling one day. we all just wore sweaters... one guy even had a T shirt on:eek: I gotta run to livingstons a/c to get new pistons tomorrow. someone put the "9" plugs back in and i melted them again (well, only 1 this time).

anyways... the motor revs up, but it's being held back. the rpms take a while to rise with my foot way down. it feels like someone is gently opening up a lid to the air box. it'll upshift and have the same results. i let off, then the rpms shoot up like nothing happened (or i can pull it down to second gear or hit it into neutral). this *usually* happens when i'll be doing 50, slow down to say 20mph, and then get back into the throttle. only once has it happened from a dead stop.

ever put the fuel plate back too far? it's similar to that

oh yeah, i went to cummins today. no, they didn't have any "gofer"' jobs for me :( , but i told them about wyotech, tdr, my truck and stuff... . they will hire me starting @ $60k a year right out of college! that made my day:D

I think I know what your problem might be. Look on Pier's site for the "secret plate alignment" or something like that. I bet your plate is binding. It looks like an easy fix.

hmm, extreme, that would make sense. it started happening after i gutted my afc (didn't move the plate, but maybe i hit it:confused: ). if it was a gasser it'd make some more sense by starving for air, but this is a diesel of course. thanks

Extreme is right.

98rammer,

It's not that you hit the camplate or anything you did wrong. I'm not sure if you took out the AFC arm or just the spring, but it allows a piece in the pump to go all the way against the camplate at very low RPM. This piece in the pump (called a rocker) is catching on one of the sharp corners of your camplate. It travels upward as RPM climb and if it catches along the way it can't travel upwards enough to where the pump puts out more fuel.

An easy fix would be to reinstall the AFC parts you removed and just set is up a LITTLE loose if that's your preference. It isn't giving you any more power, it's just more responsive and very smokey.

Good luck,

Chris

yeah, i like the down low smoke (makes people back off) i don't smoke people out though except one guy who kept cutting people off including me. i was looking for some faster spool up most of all. i've taken out the arm so the spring does nothing. i guess i'll reinstall it and just allow the afc to be forward like before. thanks again!
