GV overdrive

Dieselman359,

I'll give a mixed review on the Gear Vendor. Mine was already installed when I bought the truck. The extra gears are great but there has been problems with the electronics that lock the GV out in reverse and 4x4. Fairly expensive parts and the truck now has a two speed switch on the shifter with the "safeties" disabled. Your 2 wheel drive would have one less lockout. While this GV has not broken, many have and my opinion is the the planetary gear/clutch system is not up to the torque of our CTD's. Depending on the condition of your Getrag, you might consider a NV4500 or 5600. If I remember correctly the Getrag has a . 77 ratio overdrive, the NV 5speed a . 74, and the 6speed a . 73. The sale of your good used Getrag would help finance a conversion. Of course a US gear overdrive is another option and is built much stronger than the GV and can be used with exhaust brake, in reverse, etc. HTH.

Rodger rodbolt,

Thanks for the explaination.

Well, the guy that I brought my truck to thinks that it could be the injector pump. I mentioned the blowby coming up the dipstick. He said that he would pull the valve covers by Sat. to see if saw any bent valve stems.

I am making plans to bring my truck home instead of having a unmotivated mechanic work on it. I have two ideas to examine the engine. I'm throwing them out for comment.

One is to procure one of those flexible optical scopes. Pull the injectors and peak at the top of the pistons that way. Or pull the oil pan. Take the wires off the fuel pump solenoid and crank the motor over. I know, I imagine myself coming out from under looking like I was wearing full "grease paint". and turning the motor with no lubrication is not good. My guess would be that a holed piston would spay oil down differently than one with blown rings. I also could check the cooling jets to see if they caused the failure.

In the mean time used motors are about 25 to 35 hundred while a rebuilt one w/ a 2year warranty is 45 according to one of my nearby junk yards.

The local ad mag has one for 45 with a rebuilt transmission (5sp) out of a '92 with 120K. Also thrown in is all the electrical items, steering column, ps box and misc. other things. Rich claims he drove it around in the 1ton that he got from a friend who owns a junk yard. He was planning to transplant it into a old larger IH..... Advice? Leads on other motors?

I bought the truck in May for 10K. I enjoy it but it's frustrating to be looking at putting about 1/3 of the previous value back into it after 4 months. Down but not done just yet.

I use a 6mm Flexible videoscope from EverestVIT on the job and was gonna try to do the lil 5. 9, but with the smaller holes on the 93 (7mm) compared to my old 89 (9mm), I am worried about getting it stuck in the hole.... LOL

We borescoped the 5. 9 V8 Gaspot at work to see if there was any damage from the incessent detonation. No damage just some oily exhaust valves.

Try a compression test first, that'll at least steer you in the right direction. Low pressure, rings/valves - NO pressure, hole in piston.

I am interested in what you find. Keep us posted.

Lil'Dog,

I took your advice, the pressure was low but not zero. I've spent the weekend freeing the motor from the truck. Now it sits in the back of my listing '76 M-880. I'm glad nothing broke because it is one heavy engine. There was a film of oil and grime down stream from the turbo. I also noticed an oil leak on that intake side. Could this be the cause of the failure??? Next stop, the machine shop. Stay tuned for the next chapter of, "I think I killed my truck. "

The verdict is in

I called the machine shop and they said that one of the pistons had failed, probably due to a plugged cooling jet. (sounds familiar!) Also the oil pump gear was broken and the injection pump gear was cracked. They asked me if I have priced a drop in from Cummins. Yeah, $7500. They are saying that they will do the rebuild, $4000, but I would still have to deal with the pump. I saw an add for a `89 1 ton C+C for $2700 this weekend, it's starting to look like an option.

I don't know alot about the pumps, but if the gear is broke, can you just put on a new front gear set??? That is if the pumps ok.

Have you tried a wrecker for a short or longblock??? Usually from what I have found, the engines fine, its all the accessories that are broken (deer, moose collisions).

:( Sorry about your luck... Hope you can get er back on the road.

If you got the 89 just for the engine thats a deal... . The 89's were a good engine, even better with the 93 intercooler... LOL...

Motor no mo

I visited the machine shop this AM. I picked up all the extra pieces but left the block crank and head to pay for the 9 hours they did. I do have the scraped up piston from the 6th cylinder, the others were fine. The one thing I did get to see were the cooling jets. The engine had been cleaned so I couldn't tell if the 6th jet was plugged. I was able to see thru the jets and the opennings looked the same. I felt for the tip and it seemed shorter but there was more of the casting around it for the end of the engine. The shop guy said the injector pump might have been the cause for it. I wish I had a more solid answer. Does anyone know about how much it would be to bench test a pump? Oh the '89 had well over 200k on it. Well, on to more engine hunting.

Bummer, sorry about the dead Cummins.

Art,

Sorry to hear that you need an engine. A couple of weeks ago on eBay they sold a '95 dually rolling chassis less radiator and a few other parts that a fellow had intended to install a custom body on, it sold for just over $3000. 00 with 5 speed trans, like new tires, intercooler etc. and would deliver east of the Mississippi for $500 or less.

If you are interested in a NEW engine for less then the $7,500 rebuilt Cummins, contact Forrest at 573-696-2200 on weekends or evenings as I don't have his day number but he works for Cummins in Columbia, MO and has a sideline Cummins modification business. I saw a dozen brand new '98 12V complete engines, ready to drop in, that they bought and were wholesaling. I don't remember the price but it was like,$12,900 retail, and they were asking $6,300 exchange. Remember this is a complete engine with new P pump, vacumn pump, trans cooler, flywheel etc ready to drop in. They have been sitting on the factory crate since the '98. 5 24V change over. Tell Forrest the guy that got him his leather seats put in a good word for you. Good luck and keep up the faith:) :).

Some assemby required

I took the plunge today and bought a new long block. Then I went to the local Dodge dealer and ordered a new timing gear, pilot bushing and motor mounts. Tuesday the injection pump goes to get tested. Hopefully it will only cost me $67 for one hour of labor. I'm trying to get everything set up to do the install next weekend. All for now.
