Since it's turned cooler (<55F) in the mornings, my truck is putting out copious amounts of blue smoke for the first few miles. It doesn't lose any oil so it's got to be unburned diesel. My intake heater is manually operated and using it does help some but not much. I am thinking new injectors might be needed. AFAIK, it's still got the stock 180s in it at 130,000 miles or so. If I need new injectors I want something that will first yield good economy, and secondly good performance. Not interested in creating huge clouds of black smoke.

I've considered 215s and Lenny's stage 3 EDMs.

Thoughts and recommendations?

MIne was doing the same thing even when it was 65 degrees out. Had the timing adjusted didn't help then pulled the injectors... yeah they were bad. Couldn't see the tips it was so clogged with sludge. 215s would probably be a good pick to keep the smoke down.

I probably should check for air leaks. I've not been into the prefilter at all. I meant to at last filter change but didn't have the time to do it nor did I have a new screen and o-rings on hand in case I needed it. Where can I get the best deal on a new set of 215s?

I had a blue smoke on start-up problem a few years ago. I replaced the square cut O-ring above the fuel heater and all blue smoke went away. I still can't believe it made a difference.

Hey Bill, With that O ring you replaced, did you have hard starting like you had an air leak, or did it fire right up?

Mine fires right up, But I do have some blue smoke. Attribute it mostly to my 370's with no timing.

I ordered the prefilter repair kit and the upper o-ring from Cummins just a few minutes ago. The repair kit is now $9+ and the upper o-ring is $0. 90. Very reasonable. Now if I can just get the time off to install it all. I have also been scanning eBay for some time for a set of 215s. A set showed up tonight at less than half the price of new and the claims of only having around 1000 miles on them so I snatched 'em up with buy it now. If the new o-rings don't fix my problem maybe the injectors will. I'm gonna do the o-rings before the injectors just to see what kind of effect it has.

When you take it apart ohm out the heater. If it reads real high it's toast. Also try blowing air through the connector, if it fried then it's probably got a decent air leak.

DPinkston, Did you get those online or from a local cummins shop. Thanks, Jim

I ordered the o-ring, prefilter repair kit, and injector washers over the phone from a Cummins distributor in Louisville, KY. Just go to Cummins.com to find a distributor near you.

got 'r done

Ok, Did the square cut oring above the fuel heater about an hour ago. only took me about 30 mins to do this. I dont have any results to show yet because it was smokin like a mutha due to bleeding the air in the system, but ill see how it goes tomorrow AM

I took a few pics along the way.

Big Thanks to Bill, (hemi®Dart) for hooking me up with the O ring needed for the Job.

Pic 1 is Inside of pre filter bowl showing the prefilter

pic 2 is the outside view of the btm of the bowl

pic 3 is bottom of fuel heater

pic 4 is Top of the heater w/the new oring installed.

pic 5 is a rough pic of new oring vs. old. it was pretty crappy looking.

I received the prefilter kit and upper o-ring Firday but haven't had a chance to install it yet. I can kick myself for not going ahead and ordering the heater element in case it turns out to be bad. I am calling Cummins first thing in the morning to order one of those. I've been working 60 to 70 hours a week for the past month and haven't had time to do much of anything. Trying to get all the pieces together so that when I do get a day off I can git-r-done.
