I think I was just sent a virus?

I just got my mail, and saw an unfamiliar name in the bunch.

There was an attachment named something like "518. doc" attached.

Immediately dumped it!!!

Is this a new virus, or did I just dump something good?

I don't know if it's a virus, but ". doc" is a Microsoft Word Document.



I did a search for 518. doc on Symantec's site (Norton Anti-Virus) and came up with nothing.

Don, as soon as I saw "I need your advice on this", I dumped it.

If I remember, this is how a lot of previous virus' were worded, and being it was an unknown address, I wanted to get rid of it.

If you suspect you have a virus, send it to Symantec

If that doesn't work, go to www.symantec.com/avcenter and down at the bottom of the page, there's a link that says something like "Submit Samples". Help us all out!

A doc is a harmless file. It is not exacutable.

a .doc is NOT necessarily a harmless file!

It can contain a macro virus or it could be an . scr file renamed so you think it's relatively harmless or a . vbs or something else. Don't get lured in thinking, "oh, it's just a word document. " That's where the original macro virus came from!

I cleaned 273 infect files on a secretary's computer the other day. They were all document files infected with the WM97/Marker-C virus.
