Need help on engine acessories for 96 cummins

Recently my tailpipe broke off where it joins the muffler. I'm thinking of replacing the whole exhaust with stainless, maybe a flow-through muffler, maybe larger diameter, I don't know. If I go with a flow through, is it much louder in the truck? And I refuse to put up with any drone. I've experienced it in other vehicles and, to me, it's like one of those sonic military devices designed to drive people away. I can't stand it. From the outside, I do like the sound of other trucks with modified exhaust, but I don't want a lot more interior noise. The family uses the truck for long, multistate trips and I don't think they would appreciate it. Any suggestions?

I had installed a MBRP dual 4" exhaust on my 04' 304 stainless they are a little pricy. As far as drone I did not consider the exaust noise as drone but under load it was definitely louder on the interstate it was relatively quiet. My wife never mentioned anything aboiut the exhaust just about the turbo noise when i lost the silencer ring in the garage... hmmm I think the aluminized is probably a better choice for the money and you can get the stainless tips or tip depending on what you pic. Good luck...

Maybe you can find someone in the area with a modified exaust that will take you for a ride... just a thought!

That's exactly why I want to visit the Sping Fling next weekend downstate from me.

Spring fling?

Roy,

Where is "Spring fling" location?

I live in Beaver, PA just North of Pittsburgh

thanks, Glen

Almost forgot, whats the date? Oo.

You don't need stainless exhaust. These trucks don't generate much water in the exhaust, and it will take a LONG time for aluminized to rust out from the outside in. NOw if you just want the good looks, that's another thing entirely.

Flow through isn't inherently louder, and chambered isn't inherently quieter. A flowmaster 40series will drone like nothing else, and it's chambered.

If you go straight-through, try to use a large muffler like the Donaldson/Nelson 51" that's so popular.

I'm looking at both the MBRP and the Silverline systems. Silverline is looking better to me as the tip is included. Anyone running these systems?

New exhaust system

Howdy folks, I am looking into replacing my factory exhaust system on a 91. 5 Dodge/Cummins. Stans Headers has a 4" aluminized system with a Donaldson muffler for $475 + shipping. Would like to hear from anyone with thoughts or experience with this system. Those of you that are considering getting a stainless system watch the welds, some manufacturers or installers shortcut the process by using carbon steel filler wire on stainless steel exhaust tubing in an effort to save money and time required to switch over. (More expensive filler wire and argon mixed cover gas as opposed to CO2 for a GMA welding system. Very few employ GTA welding w/pure argon for production in your local muffler shop. )I have to admit that I've only seen this in the Denver area but it will certainly shorten the life of your very expensive stainless system. Proper filler wire for 304L Stainless Steel is 308L. (L is low carbon. ) Hope this is good information. Greg

Donaldson

Roy,

I just replaced my Banks monster muffler with a Donaldson & can't believe the difference... I know it's a long way, but Stans headers in Auburn Wa. sells an aluminized kit with the Donaldson for $400. & they'll ship it to you ... I am getting 25. 7 MPG on the highway at 55 with the cruise set, & that's up . 7 since the new Muffler... The drone from the banks is gone & the exhaust tone is now lower & wayyyy quieter. . Sounds like a semi exhaust, but really quiet & healthier than any cummins I've ever heard (except straight stacked ofcourse)... The spool is way quicker, with less boost on specific grades/areas that I drive every day, which I believe tells me that the turbo doesn't need to work as hard because of the muffler... I also saw a fuel pressure increase of almost 2 psi... The Banks CFM was 800 or so & I think Stan told me the Donaldson flows at 2100... One comment about the silencer ring... I too took mine out & noticed a slight decrease in fuel economy & I didn't like the different sound either... I've been told by the Turbo Air Guide company, who apparently does flow studies) that the silencer ring has a second purpose, & that is to keep stray turbulence coming off the compressor from interferring with the intake flow... Basically redirecting toward the flow of the intake direction... I didn't believe it, but after seeing a difference in economy I do now... Call Stan & tell him what you have & he'll send you a bolt on that you'll be verrrrry happy with... That is if you don't want drone, you want faster spool up, & increased fuel economy/increased HP & torque... I do have the Banks 4" turbo exhaust body & 4" stainless all the way out with 5" tip behind the wheel, so I expect the Donaldson will have had a little better incresase for me, because my exhaust body has less restriction than your stock unit, but as I understand it, Stan's aluminized which bolts up to your stock down pipe will increase all that I've mentioned... If you aren't happy with it (which I'll bet money you will be) you could always go back to stock & sell it on ebay.

Wyoming is much different than PA... aluminized around here lasts about 4-5 years...

Jim, Thanks for your input. My factory exhaust is rusted through behind the muffler and the rest is deteriorating fast. Dont want to take it to a muffler shop for a slop job. Lots of maintainence to do on this truck=). Greg

Nice sound?

I have a Gibson system

4" from turbo to muffler and 5" from muffler to tip.

Sound is much nicer than the old Banks system.

Oh yeah and when it hits 2500 rpm spooled.

It's like someone reached down and uncorked it!

It makes the meanest awsome deep sound I have ever heard from a muffled system.

Sounds alot like a straight pipe only a tad quieter at WFo above 2500 rpm.

my 2 cents

Bigeasy,

I'm not sure what the part number is, as it's not on the receipt, but give Stan's headers a call in auburn wa... They have a couple different mufflers, depending what you want to do... One is shorter like 24" ,I think, & the longer one which I believe is 48" has an expansion chamber in it which as I understand it, causes the muffler to "scavenge" (basically creates a vacuum between the the back of the muffler & tip )... Call Stan... You'll be glad you did... It is a little quieter than I thought I'd like, but the tone is lower & wayyy healthier... Sounds like a big rig with 6" straight stacks... . Just a whole lot quieter
