i think my lift pumped died

today after i bled the air out yesterday i started my truck up after work and let it high idle for approx 5min then drove off got bout 2-3 miles down the road and my truck sputterd a little as if i let off the gas then came back and then just died like no power steering or brakes died. so i pulled it off the road and checked the fuel filter it had about and inch to inch anda half of fuel i closed it up tried to bleed the line at fuel rail to check maybe if air was in there nothin just cranked and cranked and no fuel came out at all. then i was thinkin maybe its gelled real bad cus im not gonna lie ima first time diesel owner and did not know you have to add fuel additive to prevent gelling i even opened the drain valve on the fuel filter and cranked for a while and no fuel came out maybe a slight trickle so now my truck sits for two to three days till the whether clears up and i can pull the tank off and replace the lift pump:mad:
 
oh yeah truck is a 2003 dodge ram 2500 4x4 5. 9L with a silverline exhaust system and a afe stage 2 cold air intake and the rest is stock
 
You do not have the in-tank lift pump. It is on thefuel filter housing on the '03 model year. Unless it has been replaced in the past it isn't in the tank.

Take a look at the Air Dog website PureFlow Technologies



They have the AD100 and AD150 both for $499. I have the AD100 because it is easier to install and supports up to 550 HP. Call and talk to Toby (cust. support) good people!Oo.

How many miles on your truck. I had mine replaced, under warranty, at the Dealership. Mine has 70k miles. No cost to me. My truck is completely stock.

How ironic. When you posted about "bleeding the air" and getting it to run, I started a response that said "you're not finished with this problem... something else is wrong", since there's normally no need to air-bleed the common rail engines.

But I decided not to post it. I guess my intuition was right.

Let's face it - if you're beyond about 80k miles with the stock filter-mount lift pump and the truck won't run, that lift pump is always the first thing to look at.

ticking noise while key is turned in the on postion

after my truck died monday after work i thought maybe i needed to bleed the air out but it didnt work anyway does the lift pump make a ticking noise because i heard this noise run for a while and then it would stop today i went and got a manual for my truck and it said that if you turn the key and crank it then let off the pump will energize for about 25 seconds i didnt know if the ticking noise was the pump working and the next thing is that im kinda new to diesel engines and i didnt put any additive in it the other thing im thinking is maybe one of the fuel lines is gelled and the pump cant pump the gelled fuel in therfore causing my engine to shut off well i look forward to the replies
 
I think that the ticking noise that you are hearing is the injectors. I believe that is the way they "self bleed" the air, if there is any, in the system.

If you think that the fuel might be gelled, there is a product that you can add to try to get the fuel ungelled enough to flow again. I think it is called Diesel 911, or something like that. Others on the site can tell you how to use it. I've never had to use it so I'm not sure of the best way to get it in the system.
