my engine is sooooo noisy. Not like my 96. So i checked the valves today. Oh boy. my book says Intake 006 to 015 and exh is 015 to 030. I have some 016 intakes most 014 and some 026 exh and most 022. With a hugh spread, what is optimal?? And is it o. k. to drive till this weekend????? RRR

RRR, that is EXACTLY what I found on my 99 recently. I had about 90K on mine when I did it. I had several of the intakes 016-. 020" though. I set mine at . 007" and . 020" and noticed that I gained a noticeable amount of low end torque and the overall throttle response is a lot better. I think the optimal setting from what I have read is . 010" and . 023". As far as I know I ran mine with excessive lash for a long time, it really wont hurt anything so you can run it till the wekend no problem. Adjust them when you get a little time and you will like the results.

BTW, took me well under an hour to adjust too, about 40 minutes if I remember right.

lsmith thanks for the quick reply. I will sleep tonight. My truck has 40K. So much for the 150K adj. Hopefully it will affect the milage and noise. Man this engine clicks and clacks..... RRR

I'm new to TDR and fairly new to my truck and cummins. Where is a good source for info and tips on do-it-yourself valve adjustments? I've never had any trouble with adjustments to valves on gasoline engines (Done many types over the years) Any advice before I dig in? I've got the 98. 5, 24 valve.

nevinst, here is a link to the original thread I posted about the valves. The TDC mark is on the pump gear, take off the crankcase breather hose and spin the can looking thing it attached to off. It has normal threads btw, right hand. Do the first set at TDC and the second set at 360 from TDC, or straight down on the mark. The rest of the info is in the thread. Hope this helps.

RRR, I could hear the rockers clicking on mine too, it was horribly noisy. Noise did decrease quite a bit, but the exhuast is a lot louder and sharper out of the straight pipe.

LSMITH,

Thanks for the info. I will be checking mine out soon and that was just what I was looking for. I've got 68K on mine and it seems noisy so I thought I might need to check at least.
