You are paying a bit more for a brand new Ford F-250/350 than you are for a comparable GM or Ram truck. Is that added cost justified by the quality gap between those brands? The answer to that question is subjective I suppose.

The reason I can't sign on with this is because Ram doesn't offer comparable diesel output without a significant price bump.
  • Ford: 450/935 available across the board, MSRP $9120
  • Ram: 385/930 only available with 3500 and Aisin, MSRP $9200 + $2695 (Aisin) + $1100 (3500 over 2500)
Just to match the torque, the Ram's sticker for the diesel option is $3875 higher than a Ford F-250, and $2775 higher than an F-350.

The Ram is manufactured at the Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico and Warren Truck Assembly in Warren, Michigan, United States.

That should sum up why problems arise??

Jan 12, 2018 - Fiat Chrysler has announced it will shift production of heavy-duty Ram trucks from Mexico to metro Detroit by 2020. Fiat Chrysler says the move will bring Ram production to the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, along with a $1 billion investment and 2,500 new jobs.


But more than just a move the mindset of people needs to change. NOBODY is owed ANYTHING we need to get people to WANT to work and thats not going to be easy

It's tough to compare Ford and any other brand in option costs. Ford can and will sell at a loss to get volume sales. It works.

that might be true but I couldn't buy a Ford or Chevy equipped the way I wanted for nearly the price I got my Ram for..

I wonder if the horsepower war actually makes any real difference in real world applications, for instance when someone buys a 4500 or 5500 it usually has a detuned engine with lower output than the more civilian targeted 25-35 class pickups?

This is very true, at least from what I just experienced. My F150 ended up thousands less than a similarly equipped Ram 1500, even considering the sticker was $2000 higher. Part of that was due to the 2019 Ram being so new, but none the less, there was no comparison in price.
 
Go to TFL trucks and watch the Ford/RAM Ike Gauntlet. RAM beat the Ford by 2 seconds. Really nothing but Ford should have destroyed the RAM. FACT is RAM delivers a higher percentage of power to the ground than Ford.
 
jgillott, isn't that true of just about any NEW consumer product? if you are the first to buy something that just enterred the consumer market you generally pay the most, but if you wait until production has been ramped up for some time and the market is saturated you get a better deal, no matter what it is you are purchasing?

one of my co workers just bought a 2017 F150 PLatinum that was a dealer demo truck, it has every bell and whistle Ford offers and I believe he paid 58k for it.. and I bought a 2016 Ram 3500 Tradesman 3500DRW 4x4 in 2016 for 44.1k. pays to wait and to shop.

Didn't they also do a video where they ran them all on the dyno back to back? I believe that the Cummins put down better numbers, even considering Fords higher rating. I'm not positive though.

you watch those video too. they are pretty interesting.. you ever see that 100 mile fuel economy test between the Big 3 HD trucks witha trailer loaded to max gvw?

You are absolutely correct. It's all about the marketing and popularity as far as pricing is concerned. My new F150 was almost exactly 30% off MSRP by the time you factored all of the incentives, coupons, rebates, etc. I originally was going to trade one of my diesels on a new one. But, this thing was so cheap, I was able to get it for less strait up than it would have cost me to trade and by another HD. It fit my needs for the time being for an everyday truck, so I jumped on it and I still have all of my other trucks.

I couldn't touch that price with a GM or Ram at this point. In a couple of years, when it is time to replace it, I'll shop again. By then, someone else will be running incredible incentives and I may move to another manufacturer.
 
exactly correct.. I window shopped for a HD truck for more than a year, down where I live GM HD trucks seem to be the least common and also the highest priced, with little choice except either the most plain jane vanilla vinyl seat versions or the most high end luxury versions they offer.. whereas Ram and Ford HD pickups seem to be fairly competitive and quite a selection. I have nothing against Fords except from a mechanics perspective they are such abortions under the hood and my familiarity with Cummins engine I think my choice was made for me by my own history. fact I got the best price on the Ram was just icing on the cake
 
Yes, I've watched them all. Some of their stuff I really like.

ever see the test of the Fseries versus the Ram 3500 with the HD tow package where they tow the max weight Big Tex up the Ike Gauntlet? they aren't going any faster at the top than the tractor trailers. LOL they did it at night, probably for a reason.
 
What I have to add to this thread is my experience with the new 6.7 Powerstroke. Mine went 10, 756 miles and to go that far had consumed 3 turbochargers and 2 long blocks. They couldn’t do anything to the engine without pulling the cab. I saw my truck scattered too many times to entertain any long term ownership. I’ll live with minor inconveniences vs another garbage diesel from Ford. YMMV

This is well known, and agreed upon, but this is all about the seized wallet syndrome. (Sorry J!)
What can you get out of the gate for the least cost? Ford is and always was king at that in terms of work trucks.

Lol. No problem. Moths flew out of mine when I opened it to get this new one.
 
So I do have a newish '17 F550 in my lair now. I always try and get a owners book out of the glove box, because it's good reference. In there I found the window sticker, which is an oddity. Here I will illustrate what I mean when Ford is the best bargain. This does not reflect whatever deal they made afterwards.

The whole Diesel package is $8500, and this transmission is part of it. Add on items like a manual regen and the nifty aux switch panel overhead, and it's a tough to beat package.
Imagine if you only wanted a gasser, this would be a cheap truck.
 
The supplemental heat option is nice. Elements in the ductwork that kick on when ECT is below a certain threshold. The reason for existence is very likely tied to ghg reduction (no idle). I've never idled to warm up so it would be a great feature for me.

I can't believe they actually govern a truck in the US to 65 mph. Is that all the freeways are limited to around you Wayne? 65 going through certain cities in the Midwest during rush hour will flat out get you run over!

Fleets do that sort of thing. its like having valet mode on a supercar.

also the speed rating on 19.5 inch tires isn't very hi,... that road speed governor is just an optional way of keeping employees from tearing up the truck..

most newer Cummins equipeed trucks have an CM2350 ECM. it has a road speed governor available, it just isn't enabled on our trucks

yes, they aren't a bad way to go, but of course once you add a bed or flatbed or whatever it is goes on the back of the truck the price starts to go up correspondingly. you can get a stripped 3500 dually in the low 40's if you shop around.
