What seem to be a common problem... guage reads empty. . you stop and fuel up, you put 29 gals in a 34gal tank,... . I'm not a total idiot. . I watch my fuel milage and fuel guage, just like most of us... IAC, I pulled the tank, measured the distance from the bottom of the tank to the top of of the float thingie... about 2 7/8 in. , so I bent the stainless rod down so the distance was now 7/8... appx 2gal ( in my way of reasoning )... . well it screwed up my computor, and didn't do a thing about excess fuel left in tank when it reads empty, I still put in about 6-7gals... What did I do wrong ?

It seems to me what you did should of worked. My gauge doesn't move from full until I've used 10 gallons, that says to me that the float is pegged to the top for quite some time. Bending it down should help on both ends of the range. I wonder if you somehow messed up the sender coil wire while bending it.

first of all from what I have read on this subject the discrepancy is deliberate! Your fuel pump is cooled and lubed by the diesel fuel, not engine oil, so if you run her dry you'll be out about $4,500 for a new pump!! So the trick is to have more fuel in the tank than you think you have. Second, water, dirt etc tend to collect at the bottom of the tank, when you run it low you start sucking up the grundge, not good for the pump or engine!! again the deliberate fix is to have 5 - 6 gallons left when the guage gets to "empty". Why fight it it is there for your protection, and knowing that when you get low, start looking for good priced fuel, you know you can go about 100 - 120 miles before running out!

As far as your fix, I would have thought if you bent it up instead of down you would have gotten the desired results????
