I Thought Winter was the Alaska Tourist Season??

Well now, looks like I'll be making a run from Flagstaff up to Fairbanks AK last week in January through late February.



Any words of wisdom?? For Me? For my Truck? And which is the better route through Canada this fine time of year, eh?



I'll only be towing 22 ft and about 6500 lbs this time, but its my first winter trip up there, been there as early as April and Late as Late September.

"Squarebanks" in winter

Why would an intelligent person want to go to Fairbanks from Flagstaff in the winter time? It is -35F there right now.



Easiest is enter Canada at Sweetgrass, Mont. go through Edmonton and up to Dawson Creek and the Alaska Hyw. to Fairbanks.



Wear your "warmies" and have a good trip. .



That time of year you will be seeing a bunch of new RV's coming to Anchorage & Fairbanks, motorhomes pulling travel trailers etc all in caravans

Actually, we consider winter the tourist relief season.



1. Stay on the Alaska Highway. The Cassiar is a little desolate in the winter.



2. Carry survival gear including food, water, a means to build a fire, and suitable clothing.



3. Have good tires... . We use studded tires up here. The ice is much worst than the snow. A/T tires just don't cut it.



4. The roads are actually smoother in the winter. The snow fills in the potholes.



5. Lights... ... off road lights are most helpful. Moose like plowed roads too.



6. Windshield washer... ..... The 40 below kind. Carry a couple gallons.



7. Of course, tools, jumper cables, shovel, etc.



Many hotels are not open in the winter.

Furthermore, gas stations and other facilities may close early. Most RV parks are not open also. You will love the trip. It is quiet and beautiful.
