I don't much care for the chrome on the grill or the grey in the insert. Is it possible to paint it or am I going to have to get a sport grill? What all is involved in swapping the sport grill and bumper? Anybody got any other suggestions?
yes, you can paint them as long it is preped right . . best bet have a paint shop do the work they will have the correct primers for chrome parts and plastic ... and yes the prep is diff from one another ... . keep in mind that the bumper will have to be taken apart ,,ie to pad and the gray valance ,,, and or the clips on the top pad and the valance may break ,,, but thats the down fall of painting things like that
I just painted my grey lower and fog light inserts used dupl-color bumper renew paint I preped it with adhis-promoter taped off what I needed popped off and removed the fog lights and painted them. check LMC truck catalogs they have good oem replacement parts if you break any clips or snaps. I believe the sport model grill will fit if you change the lights to sport I think you will have a gap and the sport grill has a different support on how it attaches to the grill. the chrome oem grill is plastic/chrome coated. Im wondering if you could light sand it put the adhiesive-promoter on it and then paint it. just as long as you dont power wash your grill. well there is my 2 cents, (worth about a penny).
The sport grill is taller than a regular one; won't fit with a stock bumper. A black plastic grill is avail. at RockAuto for like $40. I have 2 that look just fine unpainted. I wouldn't think its worth messing with the stock plasti-chrome POS.
On the other hand, if you're made of money, I have a black '01 Offroad Sport front end. The Offroad has notches for frame mounted tow hooks.
I painted my bumper pad and the gray area and the fog light insert with the black fusion paint. Clean up the parts to be painted and i put the fusion on without any primer as there directions said and it came out real nice. A early model second gen sport grill should fit. They have the same size bumper as the regular chrome one.
I've done a few 12ers, always loved the sport look. The early ones would be the same as the latter non-sports (I-E the SLT bumper and grill that does NOT drop down). Here's what I've found: if you remove the plastics from the front bumper they WILL break clips (tell me you haven't seen busted ones on daily drivers that haven't even been apart. . ), you can paint the chrome with proper prep and prime, it WILL chip NO MATTER WHAT if you are the tail gater type, and it's not worth painting the stock chrome grill. Get one from ebay for around $55 including the shipping and paint it how you like. You can usually pry off your factory grill emblem and use some clear silicone or adheasive to attach it to you freshly painted grill. I like to actually glue my lower plastic to the bumper, paint it, then glue the upper on too. Keeps it looking factory fresh. Here's some pics. of one I did...
