The Holset system is unbalanced because it wastegates only 3 cylinders ((4,5,6) meaning the rear half of the manifold and rear scroll.

Yep. My PDR 40 is (IIRC) set at 38#, but I could make it hit 45# without any trouble. One 'gate doesn't have enough flow to keep the boost (shaft speed) in check.

Benifits of a wastegate would be-

Able to use a smaller turbine housing to improve spool up, which also helps in towing.

A smaller housing with either a single or dual 'gate setup will allow the housing to move more air like a larger housing non-'gated housing would, without nearly as much lag. And also reduces the drive pressure, particularly with a dual 'gate setup. You could run a smaller dual 'gate housing than you could with a single 'gate to improve spool up.

Smaller turbine housing with the better spool up will allow the power to come on quicker and reduced smoke.

Just put on a HTT 64/14 on last night. A bit more lag off boost (like the PDR 40 was before adding more fuel), but once it lights, hold on. The boost comes on much harder. I'm able to break the duals loose in O/D now. :--) Oo. Oo.

Funny you say that, I still have my 40 that I pulled off and it's on a 500 hp 12V (with a stock turbo) truck right now and is doing just fine. I had the housing machined at the opening so it will wastegate all the cylinders and it's holding 38-40 psi just fine and tows great.

Weird, huh? That was before bumping the timing also. Afterwards, never saw over 38-39#. Can't tow with it. EGTs go into the red zone over 55mph pretty easy, even with a small trailer, and ambient temps over 50*. The truck doesn't even have to work with anything I've pulled (even with a 15k load of lumber on a flatbed trailer, but... ... ...

I dyno'd 363/793 with the stock gov. springs at IRP '06. After the turbo lit, and the fuel came on hard, and I hit the governor really quick at 2400rpms, so I'm suspecting I have more power than meets the eye (dyno).

Making ~35# with the new turbo.
