I Want A Shop Vac That Really SUCKS.

Looking for a shop vac that sucks. I mean the one the will suck the life out of a tornado. Lots of power. Any one know of any good shop wet/vacs spill your guts. Or otherwise I'll have to bomb the one I already have.

Unless you want one made out of stainless steel,Craftsmans best shop vac realy sucks for the price, it'll pull in a 3/4" openend wrench. I've had good luck with mine,just don't suck up any hot slag or metal the plastic tanks don't like that much,don't ask how I found out.

The current issue(Jan 2001) of Consumer Reports Magazine has an article on shop vac tests. Top dog was Sears Craftsman 6. 25hp and second place was Sears Craftsman 5. 5hp. Rigid came in 3rd and Shop-vac 4th.

My current issue of Automobile Magazine (Jan 2001), really liked the new Shop-Vac Bulldog, especially the 2hp with 1. 5 gallon tank. Not sure if this is the one that was reviewed in Consumer Reports or not, since it is new. Of course, 1. 5 gallon is awful small. I have the biggest Craftsman they made. I really like it, but, it can be a pain in the butt to work with since it's so big.

Craftsman with the built in blower on top (low profile) 6. 25 hp sucks the rugs up off the floor VERY POWERFUL

Best bang for the buck = the big Craftsman.
Buy an extra filter so you can swap 'em quickly and an extra length of hose so you reach futher. There are more expensive units and smaller, more convenient units, but if you want an all around shop vac... ... #ad

2 years ago I threw out a 5hp Shop Vac and replaced with the quieter, more powerful Craftsman 5. 5hp. Should have done it years ago.

The big sears with the blower in top. Picked one up last X-mas, special purchase deal with xta filter and 7 tools for $99. 99. It will pick up tools left / dropped under the truck so you dont have to crawl under to collect them up. #ad

Claims 210 m. p. h. blower! Still trying to find a sock for over the filter when I'm doing drywall dust. I mention special order and the Sears clowns say "Do whut?" Oh well.

Gene,cut a section out of a pair of pantyhose leg,tie a knot on one end and slip it over. Sometimes a rubberband helps also. I've used these for sheetrock before,they clog rather fast,but are much easier to clean than the stock filter. Wonder how a K&N 0880 would work?

We fill the bottom 1/4 of it with water when we suck up spackle dust. The water traps the dust pretty well hope this helps

Go to the woodworkers forums. They really know what ..... sucks! (sorry, couldn't resist)
The dust collection systems for woodworkers uses a true hepa filter/silencer not to mention a motor that puts out what it claims. These 6. 0 hp claims from a universal motor is pitiful. Remember the RPM factor?
True motors run a nice steady RPM and powering a blower will suck the chrome off a ... (never mind).

Here's an old trick for transfering drywall powder. Put a 4" hose on the exhaust and put the outlet OUTSIDE. Any dust that blows through, blows out. Same reason that central vacuum systems are cleaner systems.

I may try that water thing.

I have thought about the Amsoil filters from the 1Gens, they are very close. But I believe these things are designed to let some dirt through, and an automotive filter would plug FAST.

One thing I've found if you put water in your vac is to remove the filter and let it dry afterwards otherwise it turns to a pile of mold.
Other great uses for a shop vac; cleaning out deep in the ground water valves whose access pipes have filled with dirt. You can also use them to pull baling twine,with a piece of plastic bag tied to the end,through conduit then use the twine to pull the wire. I once pulled 1200 ft of wire this way,it took the vac less than 30 seconds to pull the twine that distance.

I bought an attachment for doing drywall at Home Depot. You could easily make you own I suppose. Uses a 5 galion bucket about 1/2 filled with water. It has a pad with holes in it that holds a standard drywall sanding screen. Sucks in enough dust that you almost don't need a resperator. Dust collects in the water.

I checked out those Craftsman shop vacs in the store. They most be reeeaaaly powerful, they'd all sucked the hoses clean inside! #ad

The best shop vac bar none is made by Fein, it's expensive but quality costs money. I have purchased many different vac for use at work, the guys wrecked every one of them except the Fein. I purchased one to use as a dust colector at home, the model that I have has a feature that allows small power tools such as a sander to start the vac automatically when you turn on the tool. This vac comes stock with a cloth filter bag, and a pleated paper filter (a hepa filter is also available). This vac also comes with a 16ft hose that is smooth on the inside, so it doesn't clog, it easily passes 3/4"x3/4"x2" piece of wood.
If you have a need to vac drywall or concrete dust, use a filter bag, the kind that connects to the inlet.
