Castle Doctrine Redux

Well, went to look at the search and rescue cats tonight. They are sweet! No, they didn't let me take 'em out for a spin! :( But I got a bunch of pictures that I will put up as soon as I move in to the new place.

They are nice, with a custom built rear cab section for a carrying a litter. The engine, a 4-BTA Cummins, is hooked to a Chrysler 4-speed OD transmission, with a short driveshaft to the TC, then each way to a Dana 60 axle. Each axle, along with the two treads is supported from the frame on a pivoting, teetering platform, with the axles suspended by a short springpack. The steering is simple. It's a single hydraulic piston coupled directly to the steering wheel. The piston move a single pivoting bracket. An arm goes to each platform, front left, rear right, to turn the machine, in 4-way steering mode (full time). Simple really. The axles are just terminated with two dual sprocket cogs that mesh with the teeth in the kevlar/rubber tracks.

Oh yeah, the cab has rear opening doors, has a foot pedal for the gas, and also a throttle knob for running the engine independant of the pedal, joystick for the blade, wheel for steering.

The passenger door has an identification plate that cross references all engine externals, steering gear, etc, with NAPA parts. Pretty sweet!

Fuel tank is 30 gallons, tops out at 12 mph though!

The machine's curb weight is 7465 or right around there. Payload is 1800 pounds. The rear engine model, which is the one they have, the Tucker Terra 2000 model, is available with a 6-way blade and a class III front and rear receiver hitch for the optional 9000# winch.

The model is available here: http://www.sno-cat.com/Page.asp?NavID=341

Click on the "Model 2000 With Crane" It looks like this, minus the crane and outriggers, plus an extended cab for the litter and a bench seat.

Oh, and the best part, the 2000 Terra model, a 2000 model year, cost $110,000 EACH

And they have two!

Who wants to go 1/4ths with me? :)

Guess what i saw

went to Keystone this past weekend, and saw the sno cats working a slope! it was really cool. couldn't get close enough to hear if they were runnin cummins, but they looked really cool.

picture was from a distance, through a window, so it sucks. sorry

There is a sweet Unimog for sale up I-70 from Denver off Floyd Hill. It's nice!

Forrest, I see those cats too, once in a while when I go skiing. They are sweet with the powder tracks on them. I emailed Vail and Breck a few years ago and said I could go take a ride with one of the cat operators but I never took up the oppurtunity. I will though, one of these days!

if i'm not mistaken- Keystone offers a ride in the cat to haul you to the bowls on the back side of the mountain. that would be cool! I think it's like $65 plus a lift ticket.
